Unfortunately this attitude is common. Well, at east around here in a highly conservative area. here it is mostly southern Baptists and Holiness. Many churches here have the women sit in the back and are not allowed to speak in church unless it is to correct a child or to approach the pulpit.
Even highly educated women who are the bread winners of their family (I know some personally) take the " Submit to your husband" to heart. I do know the rest of the text about how men should love their wives as Jesus loves the church, but I will not go into examples how this still proves utmost inequality, IMO.
I bite my tongue since it is their beliefs which they hold dear and they are usually pretty nice people. But what bothers me is the sense of entitlement many of the men take, and while they may not be as verbal as this preacher, the sentiment is the same.
It is unsettling to me, the inequality pushed by some, and I find it interesting how the more hard core fundamentalist groups in some of these situations cherry pick what to follow to an extreme. Some of the loudest shouters of these more extreme fundamentalist branches (of any religion but it seems more prominent in the groups that worship the god of Abraham, IMO) seem to focus their vigorous support on areas that involve condemning and subjugating others while not putting as much effort into the more humble parts of the text including charity without recognition, self sacrifice, and compassion.
I also find it interesting how quick some come to their defense. What is even more unfortunate is it isn't just men in these groups defending such behavior, but women too. Sometimes the women are even more vigorous in their defense.
But then, I was raised in a semi traditionalist Cherokee, non christian, household where women are held in high honor. It is a cultural thing for me and while I disagree (really really really disagree) with this sentiment, I can not truly apply my cultural view to this one.
