The important thing to remember about the internet is this: the content is only as reliable as the telephone. Would you trust it if someone called your cell phone and told you all of this?

Yes, there are egg farms like this. None of us would be here if we didn't believe that. But are *all* farms like that? No.

Confession: I didn't watch the entire video. I knew what was coming and didn't want to see it.

I am a huge supporter of the UK equivalent- The Battery hen Welfare Trust" I take rescued battery hens (and I pay for them) and give them a good life..... free and wild as a hen should be.. I detest with a vengence everything that is "battery farming" it is disgusting... having seen first hand how these birds are forced to live makes my blood boil........ how I wish I could take all of them........ battery farming for any animal should be banned, and those that do it should hang their heads in shame... birds should never be caged, that's why they have wings! arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thankfully (but it will be a long time coming..... European standards are getting better British standards can be bad enough, but Europe shameful shameful!!!!!) .......don't buy eggs from battery farms, and don't buy cheap chicken at the supermarket..............
Oh I have soooo got to get off this soapbox for I know I will be bnned for life from BYC!!!!!!!!!!!!!! going volcanic!

OMG!!! I've seen some bad stuff in my day but, that was pathetic!!!! How is it that the USDA lets them get away with that?????????? Man!! Something needs to be done!!!!!!!!!

Very well pointed out and I think most of us on BYC know that it's not ALL egg farms that raise their birds this way - just like none of us raise our birds this way. BUT.....these videos need to be shown and the public needs to see them until NO egg farm raises their birds this way.

I would love to see videos or photos of all this. How about providing some proof so that we can fairly judge? I would love to see battery cages that give the chicken a decent life. It would give me hope for the egg industry.

I have been reading the book "poisoned eggs, poisoned chickens" about the egg and chicken industry in the US, and I think it appears there are more bad egg factories our there than there are good. No offense to anyone . . .we have a hatchery not far from where I live and my friend's dad works there. He said they gassed over 150,000 chickens last week and shipped them off in non-refrigerated trucks for dog food. . .can you imagine the end results of shipping dead animals in this warmer weather? I don't care if it is for dog food . . .this was a sad video, and the cattle and hog and sheep industry isn't much better.

Let's not turn this into a heated argument. Like I said, I think everyone on here knows it's not all egg farms that look like this - but they do exist and need to be exposed till they are all shut down. I applaud the farms that raise and care for their birds and don't subject them to these horrible conditions. Unfortunately, they aren't able to get the price per dozen eggs that they need to really make a profit. So until the factory farms are shut down, the caring farms can't get the profit they deserve. And if egg/chicken farmers can't make a profit, they either don't start the business or they soon close it down - all the more reason to expose the bad operations and get them out of the picture.

I had a couple here the other day to take a tour. They told me they had an egg/chicken business for about three years. Raised them for ________ Farms brand (big name I'll leave out). They owned their own farm and had huge metal buildings with 25,000 in each building - no cages - well cared for. He said he closed the business because he only got .09 cents per pound on the chickens and he was having to use his tractor business profits to pay for the losses the chicken business had each year. He said it finally made no sense to him to work one job to pay for a non-profitable business. Unfortunately, that's the way it is until these factory/cage farms are out of business. The guys trying to do it the right way can't compete financially.
