Danielle82, The dye only lasts until they grow their juvenile/adult feathers.
Here is some pics of the 2 that have hatched so far, the blue one did it all on his own and is all over the place. The little Greenie though...after seeing him stare at me with one big eye for a day and a half i finally decided to help.
all yolk was in his tummy, BUT he looks like hes either swollen or retaining water around his neck, anyone know anything about something like this? it's really weird. he's also all over the place..now. He was a big lethargic at first so i put him on a damp cloth and covered his belly where some of the membrane was still attached. he seems as active as the blue chick now but his head is almost too heavy for him to lift....
I am thinking thats why he wasnt able to get out on his own..I'm going to post in emergencies section about it.
I'm wishing you more luck with this hatch. It would be nice to see a bunch of fluffy colored chicks, but the posibility of making them die before they hatch goes up every time you open the incubator and lose the precious humidity........
Yeah, i know. I've really been trying hard not to, the little green guy continues to get himself stuck between 2 eggs or a carton..I try to leave him unless hes really stuck in a weird position.
I have another blue one hatching, hes about half way around the egg so far. i think it's a standard chick this time.
I had one with an oddly swollen neck like that. I think mine was due to serious temp problems in my bator (which killed most of the eggs before day 10). He also seemed very sore and would cheap loudly if I touched his head or neck. He pulled through though and seemed normal by the time he was a week old. I also had to help him hatch and he was super glued in his shell. It is possible that it could have been because he was so stuck and kept trying so hard to move and injured himself that way.
The swollen necks can be from edema due to them banging their necks against the shell for so long and not getting anywhere. It should go down in a day or so.
