I Feel Guilty Update Pg. 3!!! Puppy Prozac!

We are going to the vet tomorrow. He suggested Prozac for dogs. We're going to try it..

Any ideas on how soon we can see a change in him? I didn't even know you could GIVE Prozac to dogs!

We had a dog once that had seizures, we used to give him Phenobarbitol, so I am sure Prozac will work too.

I used to show a horse that was nervous and I would give him Quietex, I used to get nervous too and would take some as well.......

I hope that makes a difference for the dog.

You may also want to consider contacting a board certified behaviorist, if you are able to afford it. Some behavioral modification along with the medication can help too. You can ask your vet about this. Good luck!

Id say do what you can. But if costs get high (not like there is med ins on animals) i doubt many people could blame ya. But i would try to remove the kitten and see if that helps too. I love animals but have had to put many down. And humane society isnt always an answer. To full or need fix and the drop off charge. Way expensive (prob y i get so many dropoffs on the farm) but dont let him suffer if there seems to be something else wrong that pops up. Good luck

The kitten is here for good, so getting rid of her is not annoption. I think with some very strict training and supervision at first, he will learn to cope. I'm hoping the Prozac will help him calm down and not be as anxious. Now that I really think on it, I've never seen him completely relaxed...

Good thinking a hormone adjustment.....see males need it too.

I personally don't agree with putting him down at all, unless he is suffering from some kind of chronic/fatal condition or is irreversibly aggressive (kills small animals, attacks/kills other animals of the same size, is aggressive with people). I don't think that we, as humans, have that right - to decide whether something lives or dies, just because it's making our life difficult.

I would do all I could to re-home him. If you must, put a ad up on craigslist and personally interview the people in person/look at their home, take him for a visit, make sure the criteria for his adoption is being met. Is being stressed out for a bit not better than death? I know which of the two options I would take.

Whatever you do, I wish you and Pogo the best. You're right, sometimes there is no right answer for things like this.

Don't get discouraged if you see his new found relaxation disappear. You may have to talk with your vet, continuously adjust or up the dose, and sometimes add in another med to the mix. Fingers crossed for you both.

Yes I have heard of dogs on Prozac or Valium. I hope this works for him. With pure breed dogs I have seen some things that come from inbreeding that cause dogs to have some really bad problems, like anxiety, other things just because of bad breeding. I wish you and Pogo the best of luck. I hope that this works for both of you. I understand about the pack leader thing, It does take a dog some time to learn that. I hope he can adjust to the new cat and things work out.
