I feel ignorant!

I am not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but my Buff Orpington didn't feather in at all white. This is her at 3 or 4 weeks.

And don't feel ignorant. I know what breeds are in my brooder and some of them seemed to feather in over night and look so different now than as chicks. I have trouble remembering which are which and sometimes only know by elimination (figuring out the breeds I know for sure first, and then figuring out what the remaining are after that).

They could be white leghorns but their bodies look a bit plump for that age. They look to be about 2 weeks by feather development to me. Could be a little older for sure but I wouldn't pet them between 3 and 4 weeks. I want to say they look a lot like my friends Cornish x chick she got by mistake. The body at 1 week is quite full.

No matter what they are they are cute. They are definitely some form of white bird lol

The ones I have are yellow chicks, getting in white feathers.

Thank you. I was misinformed by poor internet images!

As for orpingtons, the ones I've had an opportunity to glance at over at Southern States appear to be yellow with white feathers coming in. Does that mean the ones I saw were white orpintons or is it possible the feathers darken to that buff color as they get older?

My BO seemed to be comming in white as well and they are much darker now, my order was screwed up and I was afraid they were something else and not my BO at all, but after 5 weeks they look like Bo's to mne heres a pic. from tonight

If this is what you have tho, and I think you may, you will LOVE them..while nothing fancy to look at ( I am liking a white chicken tho now) they are sooo sweet and quiet, non-pushy. They always wait patiently for their turn for treats..They are a joy!
I love em!
And apparently they are great layers!
Good Luck!

Is that wood pellets that you have in the bottom of the brooder? Like the ones for pellet stoves?

i have 30 that are 3.5 weeks to 8 weeks old and i still have a few mystery chicks and thanks to this wonderful board i know what a few of my mystery chicks are

Don 't feel ignorant! I answered a craiglist ad for bantam chicks and when I asked what kind of banties the girl said she didn't know. When I arrived to pick some out, the parent chickens were there, two female and a male, all different. She said they were a gift last Easter but she didn't know what they were. I've been spending a lot of time here trying to figure it out and I'm still not sure. It's not easy when they change so fast!

I'm not the person you asked- but you can use wood stove pellets to bed animals (check for accelerants, but in most states they are illegal), but you can also get pelleted wood animal bedding that is pretty much the same thing. One brand I can get around has some minerals added for odor control.

I prefer them for animals who pee a lot- like guinea pigs, the majority of pellet bedding is marketed for horses and then a smaller version is marketed for cat litter.

I do believe they're "Tetra Tints". They are a sex link being sold exclusively by TSC. They're supposed to lay a creamy colored egg and be high production, feed efficient layers.
