I feel so helpless, what do I do? :-(

Hi Everyone,

We received our chicks Monday, which included our rare polish bird. He(or she) has been doing great until tonight, I just notice the butt area is stuffed full of dried poop. It looks quite swollen. We tried to wet a napkin and clean it but to no advail. Any help or ideas? I am just affraid we might lose our little special fella.

You need to get it cleaned off. Run his bottom under warm water and gently get it all unstuck. You can dry himoff with a blow dryer once it is all off. I think you can put a little vasalene on the are to keep it from getting stuck again. Also, I think you give him a little molasses in water to help get his system moving. It's called pasty butt if you want to do a search for more info. Good luck!

I am just on day 1 of raising hatchlings (we had parrots when I was a kid) but Ive read that its really important to make sure the poop gets off of them. Try warm water with a touch of natural soap, and gently dab/soak with a q-tip or cotton ball. You need to get their rear unstuck. Good luck with the little one! Then make sure they get dabbed off and back in a warm brooder

Yes! Pasty Butt or Sticky Bottoms, the signs are a vent clogged with dried poop. A soft cloth dipped in warm water applied to the chickie butt to soften the poop (don't pull it straight off as you can hurt the chick). If the poop doesn't budge, get a tiny tupperware, put about an inch of warm water in it, then carefully hold the chick and immerse its tush in the warm water for about 30 seconds, then use the soft cloth. You might have to repeat this a few times. Once the vent is unclogged and the feces removed, pat the chickie down well to remove all excess water, then pop him back under the warm brooder light. "We recommend you apply a warm, wet paper towel to their rears and then use a toothpick to clear the blockage. In especially bad cases you may have to dunk the chick's rear in warm water before it will loosen up enough to remove it."

Sound pretty drastic to me, but if it is swollen, it may be blocked internally.

You do have to un stick it....warm water and a little pulling, even if you take some feathers, he'll make it as long as everything can pass and will pass.

I had one like that when I first got my chicks last june. Do not use a toothpick you could pick the chick and hurt it. I used really wet baby wipes and worked under the brooder lamp. I got a small bowl of warm water on stand by too to keep the wipes wet and warm. you can use a soft cloth too. and gently rub when it begins to soften....you can also use baby oil if you have it to help soften it up and a Q tip..but make sure you clean it out completely...and then check on the chick a few times per day and clean the bum area until the issue resolves itself.

Poopy butt as we call it around here, do what the others are saying. When I deal with it, I run warm water in a small stream from the faucet and hold there little butt under it, then gently work it loose with my fingernail and fingers. they will protest and not be real happy, but it has to be done. then dry them off real good and back into the warm brooder.
