I finally joined officially :-)

Hello :frow Welcome To BYC and Happy Holidays! How old will the chicks be when you put them in the brooder in the coop? Do you have a separate area you can keep the hens out of? Chicks need supplemental heat for quite awhile, so watch the potential fire hazard. Like to use red light bulbs or ceramic heaters if chicks are near laying hens since don't want the hens exposed to that much extra light.

If/when you get out west, be sure to visit the Lancelin Sand dunes. That was great! Good stuff in Perth, too. I would love to see some more of Australia someday, but it's far!

When we went before, we lived in Japan, so it was a teeny bit closer!

The chicks will just be two days or whatever - mail order chicks. I can keep them separated, but I was just wondering about the heat. I actually caved in and gave my hens a red heat light when it was running 20 degrees in their coop without a break for a little while... I know they are not supposed to need it, but I am a softie. It seemed like we weren't even to winter yet and it was already so cold! Anyway, I am counting on the weather being a bit warmer when the chicks come, so the hens will not need the light & I was going to make it the brooder light (probably will need two). At least, though, the hens are used to the red light at night and it hasn't bothered their laying. However, I am still thinking of not putting the brooder in there. I am not much of a handy-person. Building the roost bars and installing the automatic chicken door that I put on the shed and a few other little projects have stretched my skills! If possible, though, I might try to build something separate. That would be an awfully big undertaking for me! We'll see. I have a little more than 2 months. I already placed the order so I am committed.

Ah yes, then it would be. Thanks for that, I'll keep it in mind! So far I've only been to Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, we were considering going to Tasmania during the summer because it's starting to get very hot. :P
