I got my first egg today!

Nice! Do you have fake eggs or golf balls in your nest box? That can help give them the idea. First eggs are so exciting, and it looks pretty there in the leaves. I'll bet she was just planning a nice backdrop for you, lol.

@townchicks yes I do have some fakes in the boxes. She kept going to the boxes but ultimately made her own little nest right next to them but on the ground.
But I really think she was proud of it so I bet she did want a pretty backdrop lol
She clucked until I went in and looked at it and of course I just praised her and talked so sweet to her lol. At my house, I'm not just the crazy chicken lady, apparently I am the chicken lunatic and I'm only 6 months into chickens lol
But I don't care what anyone thinks. I am so glad to have them.

Interesting. I never gave it a thought. You might thank them for it as you take it. I usually throw a little scratch out for my birds, so I don't think they notice or mind me taking the eggs. They are busy outside the coop enjoying their little treat.

Congratulations on the first egg. When my pullets started laying in August they were laying them behind the feed storage can in the coop. I thought the older hens might be chasing them out of the nest boxes. But they eventually started using the nest boxes so I don't have to do an egg hunt everyday. They see me take the eggs and I thank them and throw out a handful of scratch as a reward. Their eggs will get bigger after a week or two. Good luck.

@Futuregreenefarm , do you have golf balls or fake eggs in the nests? I do, so I think the hens think I am leaving some eggs for them. I'm pretty sure they can't count!
