Good Girl! I had a similar situation with an $800. sale (not an animal) Paid the guy he cashed the check gave me a receipt & bill of sale then the other did not want to let me take it. Called Good Ole Sherriff Joe ( I'm from AZ remember) and had my stuff that day!!

I'm not being cold hearted towards the wife here but lets face it... Obviously she had goats for sale at her place or how would you know to drive that far for them? My personal thoughts are the husband wants to get rid of some livestock and she wants to keep her pets. 15 goats is alot of goats! I don't think her husband would just sell her beloved pets either. My husband would try to call my cell phone or make the buyer wait untill I returned if he was not sure about it. He wouldn't just say " yeah, take your pick and hey I'll let you have this one too!" He loves me and is considerate of my feelings no matter how irrational - I don't think he would tollerate 15 goats though- but he wouldn't just give them away behind my back either. He didn't let you take the one milker goat did he?

It does sound like she really wants the kid back, I have around 20 goats and I have "pets" that aren't for sale! I have one kid right now that I'm sure my mom would love to sell one day when I'm away, but she'd never do it, and I'd never forgive her if she did! I would be afraid to leave anyone other then my mom in charge if I need to leave and had someone coming to see what I have for sale, because no matter how clear I think the instructions are. If I did mess up and leave someone else in charge who ended up selling my baby I'd definately try to talk the buyer into letting me swap them (and I would be hurt if they refused, even though it isn't their fault), even offering others I'd planned to keep or that may be worth more.

The fact that she is offering a goat that is worth more and willing to eat the cost of driving to make the switch tells me it's probably about more then just money.

It is the hubby that screwed up (or maybe the wife didn't tell him because she thought he knew better, in that case she screwed up), and you are not obligated to give either back, it's more a moral delima.

I wasn't sure at first, thought it might be about the money, but judging by the hoops she's willing to jump through to get the kid back I don't think that's the case at this point, and honestly feel bad for the breeder.

And a note on runts, that really doesn't mean that much, depending on how many kids were in the litter and where the kids were in the doe can affect how much nutrition they get. This year I had a runt in my triplets, he's growing and doing fine and will make someone an awsome pet! One of my adult wethers was a runt (twins) and you wouldn't be able to tell by looking which it is. Now obviously if your looking for breeding stock the runt is probably not the 1st choice, but if she grows well she'll probably be a great goat for you! And there is no reason to assume her mom won't be a good producer based on this one kid.

DId she offer to drive to you? Did she tell you she loved it? How did she react when you said no deal??

Id keep them, it sounds like a money issue not a pet issue to me! JMO........

If she said you "should have paid $170 for both of them" it sounds like she was upset she didn't get the price she wanted or think she "could have gotten." Now, if she said "it was my pet" and not even mentioned the higher price, I would have thought it an honest mistake and considered swapping.

I personally think she just realized she could have or should have gotten a higher price. I've done it plenty of times, sold somthing and then kicked myself because I could have gotten higher. It is a loss on her part and a gain on yours.

You have the right to the kids because you paid an agreed price with her husband. Because she listed a higher price, I do not believe this to be an emotional bonding to that particular goat, honestly.

It sounds like she just wants more money. If it was really a beloved pet then she wouldn't have said well you can keep it but pay me more. It sounds like she would have liked more money for it or found someone who would pay more. They are yours now. If she wanted it back as a pet she wouldn't have offered you could keep it for MORE MONEY. I want to see pictures when you get the camera back. Have fun with your new babies!!!

After thinking about this over and over.... I finally responded to her, telling her that I struggled with it all night and came to the decision that a deal is a deal. I told her I called the OPP and had the constables badge # and name, and he backs me up legally. I told her I would have no further correspondence with her.

I truly antagonized over this, it was not an easy decision to make. But, my decision has been made. If whe wants the goat back bad enough, she will have to take me to court. Even then, the constable thought I would win.

It is a bittersweet experience. i wish I could be with my goats without this hanging over my head, but I have made my decision, and my conscience is clear. I am not happy that this happened though.

Thanks to all of youfor your opinions, it did help alot.

You must be a really tender hearted person to have let this bother you so much, YOU have done nothing wrong. Your whole motivation to even take the second goat was to keep it from being picked on. Unfortunatly not everyone is as nice as you - the majority of these posters agree she just wanted more money. How did you find her anyway?

In a day or two of feeding and playing with them this whole ordeal will be forgotten... untill they eat your flowers!

I think you did the right thing. Dh messed up and sold you the goat for less than the wife would have wanted it to go for. She proved that when she said you could keep it if you paid more. Oh well. They should be on the same page when it comes to prices.

I think your response to her was perfect. Hopefully she will leave you alone now.
