I guess I spoke too soon....

I am working on my assocoates degree entirely online from our local community college. I have taken general biology and environmental biology online. It was probably a little harder than a seated class but it was totally doable. We did our labs at home and everything. We just had to submit pictures of the process and our work. There is always a way. Dont give up, you can make it happen.. You might just have to think outside of the box a bit.

Thank you for all of the wonderful suggestions everyone.

@thinkingchickens: The nearest petsmart will probably take me about 4 hours to ride my bike to. I would sure lose a lot of weight, but in this heat I think I'd get heatstroke my first day

The nearest pet store is small so I'd probably have to cashier as well as petcare, but if retail becomes my only option, they will be the first place I try. Right now I can't justify volunteering anywhere to my boyfriend, but when I have a job with reliable days off, I am either going to volunteer at the zoo here or the local wildlife sanctuary. I miss the aquarium with all of my heart, so hopefully I'll meet similar animals and people at either of those places.

@Gullie and Katie: I do have an ad up on craigslist and one regular client for petsitting (for both in my home and those that I can get to in a reasonable time on my bike). There are just not enough people here that need their pets watched I guess.

@melodie: I asked my boyfriend that because his brother's girlfriend does online classes at the same school, but he says they don't do biology online. I will look into it myself though to be sure. If they do you can bet I'll enroll!!! Thank you for the encouragement. I did give up before, but after volunteering at the aquarium and seeing/doing all of the things I did, I will never give up on myself again.

I'm sorry you lost your job, I do that same kind of work. It is the hardest thing I have ever done. If you find another place to clean you should do what I did, I made myself a checklist. When I finish cleaning, I just make a quick run over that list. In that business, small forgotten things matter. I wish I had thought to share that hint with you. I'm so sorry.

I am so sorry to hear about you loosing your job.

Have you considered working at stables, farms, or learning to train animals? Those are great places to get your foot in the door. You would have to do some grooming and cleaning but it may open doors to opportunities.

You can take classes on animal training. I take classes on training my dog to herd. Down the line I will be able to train others.

@turney: I actually did think of making one and I was going to so I wouldn't forget. If I end up with another cleaning job, I will for sure.

@Kristy: The farms are all on the far side of the city 2+hours away by bike. I can ride maybe a little over an hour, but more than 2 hours I'm just not sure if I could keep up with it every day. I've been looking on craigslist, monster, yahoo jobs as well as googling the types of positions I'm interested in, going to websites of places like the city, the county, and local businesses. An animal job is just not going to happen right now, so I do have to suck it up a little bit longer and try to find a "normal" job.

Darn. I hope you can get back on track soon.

It's a long shot but I posted an add on craigslist about cleaning people's fish tanks. Something that not a lot of people like to do but is necessary for a healthy tank. It's also something that I happen to enjoy very much, lol. Here's hoping!

You got fired for leaving a few hairs around? Good golly! No wonder I could never get a cleaning job when I lived in the city.

I went to college right out of highschool but had to drop out because I couldn't afford it & couldn't get a job. Apparently I needed a college degree to stock shelves. I would have been happy with a cleaning job but could never find any within walking distance.
So I know how you feel.. Hang in there! Maybe things will look up for you. On the bright side, you have somewhere to live.. I hope you don't have to pay rent!
