I hate dogs- GREAT THE NEWS HAD TO SCREW STUFF UP!

I read a long time ago take a bottle of hot water with you, a squirt type, and put cayenne pepper in it, because that will wear off eventually. Squirt him a good one when he gets close enough and that should take care of it. It is scary to get chased by a dog; I love them too but was chased home (about 1/5 mile) from a neighbors house by their GS that had pups, and she was just crazed when she had a litter. I ran through a corn field to keep her away from me. SCARY. I wasn't even near her pups either, she just thought I was a threat I guess. Be careful!!!!!

I don't ride a bike but I do ride horses. Where I live everyone lets their dogs free roam.

When I am riding sometimes, dogs will run up to us like they are fixing to attack. Now, my mare really pays it no attention but I like to take a BB gun along with me and target practice

Shoot the dogs in the butt and they run away with their tails tucked between their legs....Sometimes I like to turn on the dog and chase them down with my horse and that realllllly freaks a dog out!! LOL It must be the 'cutter' in me.

That is what I was going to say. Mace might work for some, but can make others more angry and more likely to attack ... usually the ones that you really want to deter.

Using mace can be very dangerous and a good way to get bitten.

On the other hand, it MAY be (DO NOT TAKE THIS AS ADVICE, I HAVE NOT MET THIS DOG NOR SEEN HIS BEHAVIOR) that the dog is just responding to the movement of the bike (prey drive) and would cease if the rider stopped and was still, perhaps walking the bike from the area. In this case, mace would likely be effective as the dog is not serious about hurting anyone anyway, he is just keyed up by the movement and the game of the chase. Again, I am NOT recommending that you stop and stand still when he chases you as I have not seen the dog and motives can be hard enough to read in person, much less over the internet.

I would definitely be reporting to AC or avoiding that house, if possible.

well... just had my own incident. I wish people would keep their dogs under control.

Well like with our neighbors dog, we stop and get off for him when in the yard, he's in a kennel, but it upsets him. With this dog, I don't want to stop and find out I was wrong about him just chasing a bike. That would not end well. I think it's just stupid how I can't enjoy a bike ride, it's a paved road, not like something that can be mistaken for a driveway. I am SOOOO glad I saw him coming and it scared the CRAP out of me seeing him. There was a golden, a pitbull or a pit mix, and the doberman. The golden and the other one stopped but this one came FULL FORCE. There are TONS of people around here that ride bikes. I don't want to hurt the dog, but I don't want to get hurt either. Why can't dogs stay in their houses with their people?

Because their people don't make them. They don't train them and they allow them to run rampant so they can "be dogs" ... and get injured or killed, or even worse, injure or kill people. I feel sorry for the dogs because, in the end, they pay for their owner's irresponsibility. I also, of course, feel sorry for any human victims of that irresponsibilty. It is sad that people refuse to do right by the pets they take on and the people who enounter those pets.

What makes this tricky is that the owner is a cop.

Good luck.

First try talking to the dogs owners and explain whats happening maybe they will be good neighbors and start keeping their dog at their house. Its better for their dog to guard their home not their mail box.

really-the dogs are dogs-they can learn if the owner tries(generally ignorant or uncaring owners)-carry wasp spray-squirts up to 20' and I love my dogs but if they terrified someone, more power to you for teaching them.(altho ,let me say, I WATCH my dogs when they're out)
