I hate Hate HATE 'possums

Awwww, come on y'all. Possumproof your pens, then live and let live. It's not too hard because they're not very bright.

I can understand the rage when you catch something killing your girls. I nearly killed a dog that I caught tearing my cat apart. He got away and never came back, but he would have been dead if he'd stayed.

But possums aren't as fierce as they look. It's just their job to be as ugly as they can because that's almost all the defense they've got. (me, too.)

And they're really interesting, if you read up on them. They've been around a long time, even though their natural life span is only three years. They're blind in the average daylight. They don't tend to get rabies. The biologists think it's either because 1)their body temperature is too low to support the rabies virus or 2)their nervous system is too primitive to support the virus.

I've rescued and raised the babies, and they're fun to watch, even if they aren't that outgoing.

My Guard Dog dispatched a large Possum this morning!

Poor ugly critters....
I've tried to make peace with them in the last few years. Can't blame 'em for coming for dinner when DH is generous with the cat food! I sometimes wonder if FEEDING the coons and possums would keep them AWAY from the chickens. As I said, the only attack I had was when the cat food was taken away at night.

I agree - they are UGH-LEE!!!

But harmless unless you are a horseowner and concerned about EPM from their feces.
Even then, as long as I don't find scat on my stacked hay they just get broomed out of my barn if they wander in looking for cat food leftovers.

I've also learned to coexist with skunks. They know what they've got, I know and so we agree to leave each other be.
I've had a family grubbing in my yard all Summer and so far they haven't tried getting into the coop.

Now the danged raccoons are a different story - they are killers and nasty-tempered to boot!
Long ago a friend had a pet coon who would get into the fridge and then get himself shut in.
Lord help you if you were the one who opened the fridge next...
