I hate it when people call Thanksgiving "turkey day"

The way I see it, x-mass and most other holidays have lost their original meanings. No one sees thanks giving as a time to be thankful. Be honest, when was the last time you seriously thought about the things you have and are grateful for, during the thanks giving holiday. For me, it's been a very long time.

When most people think of thanksgiving, it's about reconnecting to family and eating a big meal. So, considering it Turkey day isn't a real big stretch.

*raises a hand** I know lots of people who giving thanks daily is a requirement of their religious prayers, and my atheist uncle still counts his blessings every day and pauses to recognize sacrifices made for him.

Yes I agree that commercialism has taken over many a glad hearted thanks and no because most of us still have it inside, whether we thank Him in a demonstrative way or in our silent prayers. And isn't going through all of the preparation for this meal a form of thanksgiving for the family that we still have around us?

I would love to go back to my childhood, before football, before black friday, and spend my morning at church and then go to my grandmother's house for our Thanksgiving meal. Since that isn't going to happen anytime soon, all I can do is keep the memories of those times alive in my heart and the way I keep Thanksgiving.

Even when I made a vegan thanksgiving with my hippie friends we called it "turkey" day and still made a faux turkey with all the faux accessories. It's a holiday about gathering around a certain meal and the day means different things to different people but the food seems to be a commonality so the nick name works for me. I feel like if you are only giving thanks for what you have one day a year then it doesn't really count anyway.

The happy little story we all learned in grade school in more folk lore than historic fact and it's origins do make it a sort of an awkward holiday.

For me it has always been about getting up early and cooking with my dad and the one day of the year my whole family eats together. And, growing up it was the only time I ever ate turkey.

We have a family tradition when we sit down on Thanksgiving before cutting the turkey we give thanks out loud for the things and people we are grateful for in the spirit of the holiday. The turkey is one of those things we are thankful for or having food in general. I don't mind 'turkey day' but I much prefer Thanksgiving.

I agree with Kizanna and Celie I am what is termed as not Politically correct and if a Holiday is say Christmas then it would be Merry Christmas not happy holiday or Halloween the term used at the door is Trick or Treat not happy Halloween.
This has been put in place so as not to offend some one because of there religion or lack of
.
Buy the way Calling Thanks giving Turkey day B.S. people eat Ham on Thanks Giving and other things as well Tacos and Pizza should we start calling it Happy Pig day LOL.
Thanks Giving is truly a day we give thanks to what we have as well as the people with us.

I am just old fashion in my ways of thinking I guess.

I'm not sure how the sincerity of a person's gratitude and humility is determined by what they call a certain holiday. Nor do I see a problem with inclusivity.
