I am sorry to hear about the loss of you baby chick. I live in a 108 year old house. I did have a rat problem when I first moved in. Aside from the ones that the dogs managed to kill, I finally got the kind of bait that comes in a block and looks like corn cobs. You break it up into pieces. As my house has a small cellar where the hot water tank and furnace are at, and the rest is a crawl space under the house, I took the bait and broke it up and threw it in all the areas of the crawl space that I could reach. I made sure that there was no way for any other animal to get in under the house. I didn't want to accidentally poison the wrong one.
(We have a bunch of cats patrolling the neighborhood) Now I have a mouse problem because of the birds that I keep in the house.
I did discover that my mice have learned to lick the peanut butter off the trap and not spring it. A neighbor suggested taking a piece of bacon and using a twist tie to secure it to the lever and use that.
However, I have 6 MinPins, and two of them are avid vermin hunters(the oldest and the youngest ones
) the other four are couch potatoes for the most part.
One of the things that I do with using the bait in a box is to mix some bird seed in with it and place a small container of water with 1 teaspoon of bleach in it nearby. When they eat the seed poison mix then go take a drink, it reacts with the poison faster and the little nasties die much faster.
Off to war with the meeces again!
