I have 150 eggs set as of Saturday Feb 13th.

for you! I seriously don't know how you can manage to candle 80 eggs!! let alone 150!! I think it'd take me a week just to get through them all.

I can't candle that many either. Well, I don't have anyplace for 150 eggs, so it isn't an issue. But I can put about 44 in my Genesis, and when it is full, I don't candle them all.

I just candle a sample of them, and if I get a bunch that are moving around, I am all happy and then I stop.

I guess it isn't very scientific.

The only time I candle them all is when I am going into lockdown.

I have to candle them or I would go nuts. It's really not that hard if you have them numbered like I do and have them in a holder. I just take them out 12 at a time and poof they are done. I am glad I did too because I found 1 egg cracked that was starting to leak and I found a few that had done nothing and were clear and then I had 5 I think that were questionable. I have not candeled any yet today but the night is still young. Later, Dave

You can mark chicks with food coloring.
I have 2 chicks that are light Brahma x EE that I marked with green food coloring because they are in with the Pure Light Brahma chicks.

then I noticed Yesterday they have tuffs on their cheeks, so I didn't need ot mark them after all. But I didn't want to confuse them with the Pures when it comes to moving everyone around to coops..

Thanks a lot. My wife is a kindergarten teacher and she keeps that around here for all sorts of stuff. We have a bunch of colors so that will be a great Idea. Thanks a lot. If anyone knows of something else to mark chicks with let me know your Ideas also.
I did finish candeling eggs to night and the other 80 eggs went this way. 6 eggs were clear so I put a ? mark on them and will remove them next time if nothing is going on. I found 1 with what looked like a bloodring so I took it right out and I had 6 BCM's so dark I could not tell anything except there was a darkness in them so I think they were growing. That makes it about another 70 eggs growing and maybe 6 of them are duds just not sure. That still gives me a combined bunch of eggs totaling around ( 69 plus 70 ) = 139 that are growing out of 150 or so. I also set in another incubator 14 EE and Ameracana mix eggs that came to late for the other group. Not really sure how these eggs are going to do. They had a heating pack with them but they came through some really cold and icey weather to get to me. I let them sit for almost 36 hours before I put them In the incubator.
I am also talking with Steve and Sharon of SandS poultry about some Blue Cochin eggs they might still have. they also have some RIR chicks and some Buff Orps for sale. They live about 10 miles from me so I may just pick some up. They have some eggs for sale on Ebay and I may try to get some of them or just go to their farm. I had some of their Speckled Sussexs and some RIR'sfrom them before and theey were nice birds. They have a lot of different Turkeys also and I want to get a couple of Burbon Reds from them but I think I will just get pullets insted of eggs.
Take care everyone and keep checking this posting. I will keep it going through hatch and post some pictures. Keep the good wishes coming and the Ideas also. Good hatching to all. Later, Dave

Just read the thread, good luck Dave! I'm due to hatch 32 eggs on March 3rd! That's enough for me in one hatching. In addition though, I have another 12 2-5 week old chicks in my outdoor brooder. 10 of them are Mottled Java's from Steve and Sharon at SandS. I drove out to pick them up...it was 2 hours each way for me because I'm not on the coast!

Definitely worth the trip because these birds are beautiful! I've got them in with a lone Delaware, and a lone White Java. Hatch in now is Delawares, Barred Rocks, Black/White Javas and BBS Orpintons.

Just remember to take care of yourself too, watch that sugar. I don't know if you've read any of the new diet info on Diabetics but American Diabetes Association is a little bit behind the times now. They are now recommending that Type II diabetics only get about 130 grams of carbs a day. I know my mother in law is a carb addict and really good at looking at how many sugars and carbs are in each and every thing that she eats, but she is really bad at totaling them up.

She had breakfast at waffle house last week, she had a blueberry waffle, with sugar free syrup, bacon, coffee and then ate my father in laws toast with jam. That breakfast was 114 carbs without her even knowing it. She had sugar free syrup etc... bakes with only splenda, doesn't eat candy with sugar in it.... (Please not this is not a lecture, just passing on info).

I know I try to look out for cholesterol for my family knowing we are only supposed to have 30grams a day, but I do it the same way, I see how much is in this, how much is in that, and as long as it is 30% of our daily allowance we eat it.... I never think, that's not OK to eat that same 30% 6 times in one day. She does the same thing.

But this is a new thinking compared to the old way of percentage of your plate, or number of diabetic exchanges, etc that they have taught in the past, and it sounds to me like you have been diagnosed for a while so I thought I would pass that along so you could look into it, talk to your doctor about it.

I hatched out 11 of 18 BCMs from Melissa.
I've also hatched out leghorn and speckled sussex from Nancy in the past.

As you said, great people and salt of the earth.

Good luck.

You need to continue to get your a1c down. It's hard, but when it's high, organs are being destroyed.

My last hatch I set 65 eggs, had 48 at lockdown and hatched out 41.

41 for an urban desert chicken farmer is too much at once. I'm cured. Selling roos has become a hassle.

I'll probably never set more than 30 eggs at a time when I set eggs in the future.

Dave, someone told me that the more obsessions you have, the happier you are. So I think you must be a happy person!

I agree, watch the DM. That mother in law sounds like my husband. I watch his diet but I can't watch it all the time, and I can't seem to make him understand that things like ketchup, for example, have sugar in them! Or pickles. That sort of thing.

My husband is a college professor, smart enough guy, but perfectly content to let me know anything there is to know about diet. Sigh.

I hope you have a good hatch, Dave. Remind me what kind incubator they are in?

Catherine

I have 3 incubators that are homemade out of the sturdy plastic large 48 quart coolers. the other 1 is a Hova- bator model 1602n. It was a still air type but I put in a computer fan myself. I was an electrician before I got hurt and had worked in Maintenance for most of my life. So I have four incubators going right now with just three of them full and 1 cooler type has only 14 eggs in it. they were the EE eggs and Ameracauanas that came in late. I am still waiting to see if I get eggs from SandS poultry or if I just get chicks. I am talking to my wife about it and I am not getting to far with the Idea. She seems to think with almost 150 eggs incubating I might have enough. I think i will fix her a nice pot roast dinner with potatoes, onions, carrots celery and homemade biscuits with gravy. Remember I said for her and the kids. I won't mess with the gravy and only eat 1 small biscuit. I am also only drinking water, unsweet tea or tea with splenda.
The really Dark Brown BCM's are from pasofinofarms ( Melissia ). They are in the center and the back left of the flat Hova-Bator. Bargain ( Nancy )had only BCM's taht were on the down side of their color but she assured me they were from parents of Dark Egg's. I totally believe her. The last few I got from her were really nice and the person I sold the chicks to loves them and they are just starting to lay and are laying really nice dark eggs about a 7 he said. Nancy got her's from Mr. jesse the Copper King and he had some really great stock. Nancy has some really great birds on her farm. If you look at the large cooler in the 2nd bunch of pictures Nancy's BCM's are to the back and on the right. They have a couple of eggs on top of them in this picture. They are now only stacked in single rows and nothing on top. I just had to get thing organised and another bator fired back up. I will up date picture soon. I also got some nice Wellsummers from her. They are next to the BCM's. There are a couple that are kinda speckled and I love that type.
Thanks a lot for the advice on the new guide lines on eating. I appreciate anything anyone can send or tell me about. I don't mind anyone sharing and don't consider it preaching or anything else. thanks for all the concern and the love shown. Take care and I will update as time goes by. take care all, Dave
