In Florida you need to have coop with lots of ventilation and off the ground just in case it floods. Your pen needs to be well fortified against predators-plan to use a lot of hardware cloth, and make sure the wire skirt around the pen is well placed. Your hens don't need a rooster to lay eggs.

I have 5 acres in Florida, so it is really hot here. I would like to start with some chickens but not a rooster. Are there some chickens that I can buy that will lay eggs with out a rooster?

How many should I start with? Any tips would great greatly appriciated.
All hens will lay without a rooster.
LOL well what you want to start out with and what you end up starting out with are two entirely different numbers. If you start with 5 you'll end up with 100 or more anyway ( it is called chicken math you will learn it if you have them long ) so I'd start out with 100 and have 500 in 6 months LOL

Just so you have an alternative opinion...

Chicken math is not irresistible. While I entertain thoughts from time to time, I am perfectly happy with my 4. They're covering me up in eggs for the 2 of us, and we're giving away lots. They get along without squabbling and I am not about to rock that boat by trying to bring in more.

Now, that all may change in the Spring when I wander into the feed store on chick day, but for now, I'm resisting chicken math.

I was resisting too, until I started incubating them....

Now I have to work to keep my numbers down.

LOL I set 16 last saturday and I've been fighting with myself all night about setting 32 more eggs in the incubator this weekend. .. 55 quail due to hatch next weekend. .. I can not figure out how everyone elses chicken math is addition and mine is higher multiplication. .. I'll have to figure it out with a little more calculus
