I live in Texas too, and in rural communities there is usually NO animal control, NO shelters, most people do not care. There are small networks of people who work hard to rescue any they can (I foster.. shh don't tell I don't need dogs dumped at my gate) The best the sheriffs office will usually do is come out and shoot the dog. Its a sad and appalling situation. People don't spay/neuter.. they let animals run.. dump them on rural roads, and dog fighting is prevalent. Every rescue is overwhelmed and always full, heart breaking.

They make chicken harnesses and leashes! I've seen a guy with one at a flea market! It was wonderful! The hen just walked around and greeted everyone and was fed all kinds of treats!

I find that odd, in that- in the USA there is rabies. Ireland does not have rabies; strict quarantine laws. You do need a license and now a mandatory chip. the license is similar to a tag, required regardless. Ireland is about 75% agricultural. but small, 4.5 million people about the size of West Virginia.

one would think that in the country licensing would be particularly important because of pack possibilities and rabies, and if your livestock/children are at risk most importantly. I think a shooting solution is a lackadaisical approach to animal responsibilities. and just totally irresponsible. I am sorry to know that this is what you have to deal with.

I honestly was not trying to make an "evaluation" about where anyone should live, and I was raised in the city. Not trying to offend either . I was imagining that it would be funny for all those who are displeased with chickens in the city.. looking up to see chickens coming down the street. I personally think it would be adorably funny.

Get real. Turkeys would be infinitely funnier.

It varies by area. My county handles tags, not the cities, so even though I live outside city/town boundaries I still have county tags.

We also have an unusual "problem" in that there's an adoptable dog shortage so our shelters and rescues regularly bring dogs from other areas. I have 2 from California and 1 from Texas.

a few year back, Sweden learned of the amount of dogs Ireland was euthanising, approximately 14,000/year. Sweden began a programme, with Ireland, that brought unwanted dogs from ireland to sweden for adoption. Loads of dogs are also sent to England for adoption as well.

My cats/dogs have rabies shot every year.. it is mandatory, and you get a tag and a certificate. Nobody checks unless there is a bite. Rabies is scary
