i have a chicken that has a scissor-like beak-not aligned... :( ????

unfortunately i can not post pics at the moment but i will try my best to explain the issue. one of my easter eggers beaks are not aligned properly. the bottom beak seems to be normal but the beak on the top goes off to the side. i don't know what this is called or if it is just called deformity. her head is slightly mis-shapen as well. when she was tiny she was bigger than all the other females... but now she is the smallest. i am concerned that shes not getting enough food. now the top beak is starting to curl a little-not much but i want to know when it would be a good time to actually trim it and how far. i have chicken books but they only show pic of de-beaking. i'm worried about her to say the least. please any info is helpful! x

Is she eating ok with her crooked beak? Be sure she is. You can trim the edge of the beak with human or cat nail clippers. There is a part of the beak at the end that is clear looking, there is a clear difference between the very tip and the rest. I was real nervous about trimming the beak cause I heard horror stories of bleeding. Try to keep the shape of the beak and don't worry. Take less that you would like to as a safety measure.

I learned that trimming beaks are like trimming dog toenails, there is a quick that will bleed. I tried to have my girls beak trimmed (went to a bird groomer who uses a dremel instead of clippers) but we really couldn't do much. I feed her in a deep cat bowl so she can scoop food into her mouth. I also feed her yogurt.
