This lady has a bit of pasty butt. I took her inside and examined her and her vent is kinda limp, and crusty. She seems to Star gaze a lot, and makes a very quiet egg song every so often and looks like she’s trying to poop or lay an egg. I’m thinking she’s egg bound or has a broken egg inside. I can’t feel an egg, but it seems painful if I feel around her abdomen.

I have her soaking in a warm bowl of water right now, and if she doesn’t pass something soon, I may cull her. I gave her some nutridrench straight up, and I think she consumed some, and I think she’s drank some of the water as she’s been soaking. She looks slightly less squinty, so she may be rehydrating a bit, but still hasn’t passed any poop or egg. She has not tried to get out of the water bowl, so I think it is soothing. Anyway, what are the odds of her recovering and not relapsing? She’s about 11 weeks old, this was probably the first week or so of her laying, she has definitely layed because her vent is stretched. She was housed with about 20 other juveniles, and all are fine.

I did have 1 in the group who grew and matured much more slowly than the rest, I kept her separate with a younger group until she was feathered and had layed, and I put it in the big group a couple weeks ago, I don’t know which it is, this could be it, or not, they’re all scarlet haha. If it is that one, it could just be further evidence of internal issues it was born with.

Any suggestions or should I cull her?

I would cull if time allows and look to see what the problem is while cleaning for the freezer. IME prolapsed and egg bound hens only survive 24-48 hours after first noticing a problem.

After I finished typing I took her out of the bowl to put new warm water in and to check her vent, and I could feel an egg. I helped her push it out, she cried and strained a lot, and it came out. It isn’t even unusually large. She’s now foraging around looking wet but fine. She got out of the bowl when I put her back in to get some warm water on the tender area.

with me helping her, I could feel her pushing and the egg move down to the exit, but then she stopped pushing and it went right back up, so I squeezed gently behind it (in front of it depending on the direction your looking haha) after she pushed so it couldn’t retract, then I gently slid the vent back a little and she pushed again and I helped save her progress etc, and it finally popped out, thru the whole thing she never prolapsed so I’m hoping she will recover. I’ll see how she does after a night inside.

So happy you caught it so fast and were able to help her!!!! She will probably do fine now!!!!

Sounds like you did the right things. You might try a bit of vaseline around her vent if it happens again. Make sure she has plenty of calcium available.
I gave her a bowl of egg shells that I save for my snow angels because they’re small and I worry they can’t eat the oyster shell. She hasn’t eaten any yet tho. But she did pick up some of the millet I spread around for her to forage, because I wanted her to poop. So at least she’s eaten something, which she hadn’t done all day that I’ve seen.

Also I gave her some of the better food I feed the house Quail haha, they all like it better, but it costs more.

Well done u epsom salts in warm water is good i heard? Yeah a bit of vaseline or oil around her bottom if happens again may help so glad u didnt have to cull her u done fab 💖💖
