I have a Silkie??

I will be getting some silkies soon. I never thought I'd do it but everytime I see pics of them the thought would cross my mind. So, in a few weeks I'll order up a partridge, blue and buff.

Here's where they'll live:

I found this on a British site and it's perfect for the 8 that will be living in it. The silkies will live with my 3 little Hamburgs (1 roo), and 2 Nankins I hope to buy. DH will help me build it and we'll add a run tall enough to sit in.

Here is another nice option:

I know Connie has gotten birds from George in the past. She has also gotten from Stanford, Travers, Royal, Don Jones, and Shorty Polston too. She did mention some old guy over in WI too that I can't remember the name of. She has done such an awesome job taking the best from each line and combining them over the years.

Honestly this is not meant to be pissy, just a reminder that at times, unless you know the person personally, they have told you straight up who they bought from or how long they have been breeding that color or variety an how they bred it. It is probably best not to say anything at all. Neither Suze or Chris have ever been in my coop or a close friend.
So what you know is only what you think you know, lol

And Chris I was very upset to hear about the dismantle of your flock you worked so hard on, I do know what its like to try to hold onto them through life changes. I hope to see you at a show again.

The black program is the big shocker, everyone seems to think they all came from George, honestly I owned blacks from Myron Turk, Glenn See, and Eddy Travers before I bought from George! I also used to own Hattrick in the first two years, lol

The blacks from George did not line breed, so I do not have a black on my place that does not have multiple lines in them now. My first year breeding came from one hen from Myron Turk, the girls from George did not lay until year two thank you very much, they were too fat.

What most people do not know is my pullets from Myron Turk won just as many awards as the ones from George. Two years ago I borrowed birds to breed into the program from Barb, who has birds from a number of sources. And the year before that I used a Glenn See/Hattrick/Turk cock I bought back from someone here in MN. This year I have my own males working the pens and chicks are hatching. Another 2 years of breeding and the blacks will be my line.

As most ABA/APA breeders do not call you a real breeder unless you combine lines to create your own for at least 5 years. Line breeding someone else's work is not your own line.

My white program is in year 10 and has been a very long road. The original birds that I put with starting that program came from Royal in CA and Eddy Travers cock. Than I added in 8 Shorty P birds to the flock. Over the last five years I bought 4 Don Jones birds and 4 from George M. to breed into the flock. All the original breeders where sold on eggbid and are scattered across the country.
The whites in my program now are birds I bred or came back to me from my line. Thanks Amy for the wonderful pullet at the New Ulm show!

And remember, at times I exchanged birds and eggs with George, so he has some of my line in his, ROFL

That is the fun of breeding, showing, seeing friends and exhanging birds an talking poultry.

Hands down I love every bird from George, but the other birds I bought from breeders have just as good qualities or I would not have used them.

Have a super day, it is snowing like heck here and I need to get some chores done.

Connie:cool:

Hey Connie, I had no intent on degrading your birds or breeding ability--please don't think I did. I know that you got many birds from George over a couple of years, and that was the basis of my comment--remember, the whole topic came about from talking about silkie size, and that George birds tend to run at the large end of the silkie spectrum.

Yes, it is odd to be on a message board again. lol

Not a problem, I love my birds! And that is all that really matters. ; )

Birds from breeders tend to reflect the persons taste who bred them. George likes a manly big bird, good health aka well fed. If you sit an talk with Don Jones, he likes it to be a true "bantam", so size and weight are important to him. Eric Kutch has his own taste, my problem, I like them all, ROFL

All that matters is that you love your birds. I will take none of this personally and hope to see at a show soon!

Hugs,
C
