I have a single duck (10 mos old khaki Campbell female) will she be too cold alone?

Duck too cold?

  • She’s fine, leave her alone where she is.

She is a singleton khaki campbell duck born in March of last year. Her companion unfortunately died of a fox attack this past summer. :(

She has about 6 inches of pine shavings inside of a cardboard Costco box with a standard infrared heat lamp (same one typically included in hatchling/duckling starter kits sold at Tractor Supple) that’s hanging about 3-4 feet above that and her water supply.

It’s -6 with snow on the ground here tonight. There’s a lot of gusting snow, but as you can see, we rigged up some tarps for a wind break. Will she be too cold without any other ducks to cuddle her out there? How quickly would a duck die if they freeze to death??

I can try to check on her regularly throughout the night, but waking up to all those alarms sounds brutal to me lol. Or I also have a large indoor cage on wheels in basement that I could put her in for the night if need be?

Which would you recommend and/or what would you do if it were your own pet duck?

Thanks!

bring her in basement
she is alone = depressed
that heat lamp is very dangerous
she should not have water for bathing when its under freezing temps outside
she does not even need any water for overnight anyway and no food ovenight
give her a stuffed animal and unbreakable mirror
get her another duck (or 2 +)

I don't know what your climate is like, though I do see snow. Looks like a good effort to block wind and provide a little warmth. From my limited experience, ducks are very social and I suspect she may be depressed, another stressor along with the cold. A ducks' upkeep is work but another 2 ducks = 3 won't be much more work if you can keep their poop away from your porch!

Best to you and your Campbell !
