I have had it !!!

agreed but i have had some stupid boyfriends in the past i could see getting my dog killed... i would want to be told and if i wasnt i would wonder why? plus if one has to live next to this stupid neighbor let them start war not me! if you tell her and she does nothing then you shoot the dog and wonder why the dummy let her dog die.. no harm in giving her a persoal warning thats all.
simply seems like the right thing to do.

""The neighbor across the road who shot 3 of my turkeys last year and shoots at anyone's dog who gets on his property has a new live in girlfriend who has a pitbull mix dog they let run loose.""

Sounds to me like they are BOTH culpable. One shot the turkeys and the other has the dog. They BOTH share the same mindset.

Somewhere in this thread is a comment that, in your part of the world, you sue in a civil court for compensation if someone kills your livestock. That's all fine and dandy but if the killing involves entering your property with a gun or firing into it that is, surely, a very different matter. If you didn't involve the police at that point, why not? Was there already a feud between you and the neighbour that caused you to sail close to the legal wind?

That apart, if you have a neighbour who shoots your poultry and is prepared to share his home with a woman who keep a pit bull horror, then shooting the dog will heap more trouble on your head. He would be the type to hit back even harder. You need professional advice on how to solve this within the law. Even then, the guy is likely to retaliate if he isn't actually locked up.

Is there more to this story that would explain the attitude of your neighbours?

I also echo the comment made earlier that it's not a good idea on a public forum to advocate breaking the law.

Years ago I gave my neighbor a bill for the birds that his dog killed. They did not pay. I filled in small claims court and won because they did not show up. But they never paid and if you win it is up to you to collect. So its a waste of time. Problems with neighor is exhausting. After awhile you worry that you can't ever leave your animals alone. I moved to get away from all the drama.

And that may be the only acceptable solution in this case.

Behaving in the same way as the offender just means joining a game you can't win. If the neighbour doesn't respect the law and the law will do nothing about it, you either put up with it or go. Walking around with a gun would be seen as a challenge to a nut job who is obviously prepared to use his own gun. Given his behaviour so far and the company he keeps, one might wonder about his past record with the law and just how loony he might be.

Perhaps they should throw buns into each others' land - Bun Fight At The OK Corral. Safe than the alternative and that does seem to be a possibility.

You can try to dog proof your turkeys. I have alot more than just dogs that try to get my turkeys. Shooting them is not the answer. There will always be something out to get them if you do not have a safe home for them.

Yes the guy has been told about the dog. In Illinois you can be arrested for stepping foot on someone elses property without permission. The guy has an unlisted number so there is no way to call and get permission. He has No Trespassing signs plastered all over his driveway next to the road which makes it illegal in Illinois for me to step foot onto his property. The Animal Control Officer was at his house 15 minutes after I called so yes the guy knows the dog is causing problems.

I was at work and my son let the turkeys out of the pens to let them pick and the turkeys ended up going onto the guys property and he shot them. I don't give a rat's platoot who reads what I post on the internet. If the dog comes onto my property again it ain't going back across the road. And yes the turkey pens are secure but when a pitbull decides to go through poultry wire it is going through it.
