Go to mypetchicken.com and use the chicken selector tool you can choose weather you want breed that are cold hardy. I did that and it said Amerucaunas (easter eggers) can withstand cold. I just got two babies that are a few weeks difference in age, one is a cochin and the other a brahma/cochin mix and they fell in love with eachother after a day. I think the only time breeds don't get along is when they are very different in size, ex. Jersey giants and Silkies.

Alaska: If your coop is 8'x8' that is 64 sq. ft. Divide by 4' = 16 chickens. You need 4 sq ft per bird. Some people use 3 sq ft per bird but I use 4. This formula is differnt for bantams. Other considerations are space taken by feeders and waterers. Yours will be in the coop a lot with very cold winters so they could use a bit more space than warm climates where they are outside most of the time. Good luck with your new babies!

So I'm reading this and wondering....who actually has a baby monitor in their coop? I love how spoiled some of these little ones are!!!

Baby monitor in coop here. After losing two in as many weeks to unknown predators it seemed like the only choice. Besides, it is so cute to listen to them talk when no one is around.
