Last week when collecting eggs I noticed these small blackish bugs all over the eggs. I at first thought it was sand until I picked it up and noticed my arm covered in bugs!!! I figured they were mites so I dusted all of them in sevin, cleaned out the coop, coated it with sevin and did the same to their run. I did that same process 7 days later. I haven't seen any bugs since, but my chickens are losing feathers on the head and neck as well as the base of their tails. No one is pale or seems unhappy, but if its mites I have no idea what else to do. Could it be lice? Also, can bird mites and lice live on people because I'm totally freaked out by this and my biggest fear in life is head lice (I know that sounds stupid, but it freaks me out!). I read a post online about how bird mites have lived on people so I may honestly be a little afraid to really get ahold of them and check.
