I have some concerns about supporting hatcheries...

My family and I are trying to do everything through independant stores and family run ventures.

It has been almost 2 years since we even stepped into a Wal-mart!! I am having a few problems with clothes, but I am working on that too!!

I say go independant and family run all the way!!!

With the number of packing peanuts hatcheries stuff into orders, I'd have to say that they are at least trying to give the male chicks a chance at life... even if it is by sending them to people who may not even want them.

That said, I want to say most hatcheries are converting and breeding for birds who can be feather sexed, which is less stressful that being squished for vent sexing.

We usually have some stragglers in our hatches if you are only looking for a handful of chicks from different breeds. We usually just keep them and grow them out but you are welcome to come out and take a look sometime. I don't think you are far from us I think 2 hours maybe? You have chatted with my husband (Turbo) before about the drive.

We can order straight run and eat the extra roos when they are old enough to be eaten. Also if we have extra roos we have better chances to keep the best quality ones and cull and make lunch/dinner with the rest of them.
