I have some concerns about supporting hatcheries...

i wish people would give me their rooster chicks if they don't want them. like the poster above me, there are too many folks around my area that would appreciate a rooster for their hungry stomachs.

I tried to give away grown young cockerels last year after I raised 100+ to pick the roos for my breeding pens... Nobody would take them and I couldn't find anyone to process chickens for me so I had to process 90 odd birds myself. I now have chicken for the year.

Many of these breeds being raised in hatcheries are not a type of chicken that would make a meat bird as we know it today. Even my home raised Marans and Faerolles did not look like the birds you buy in the store (but taste much better).

I just spent $40 at Goodwill. I got 2 huge bags of clothes including Levi's, Lee jeans, Land's End sweaters, and a Columbia jacket.

I'm not sure there is an easy answer to this.
There are always going to be extra roos.
It's great if they can feed a hungry family but in order to raise a dual-purpose breed to a size acceptable for eating it takes more money for the feed than it does to buy chicken in the store. I know this from experience.
I think the best we can do is try to influence hatcheries to humanely and/or usefully dispose of these unwanted roos.
Buying from a backyard breeder or straight run is good too if it's possible for you.
I guess being educated about your options is the best we can do.

My extras have always gone within 15 minutes of me advertising them.

I think this thread jinxed me, because I got 8 RIR roosters with my chick order on Friday. They were snapped up ASAP too though.

I never have trouble getting rid of extra roosters.

you need to let me know next time! i got the extra roos from nancy (greentree) the other day.

I just sold a young cockeral on craig's list. He was sold as a pet though, not as meat. I have seen lots of people selling chickens on craig's list in our area.
