I keep my polish in a mixed group too, my two older frizzle girls are actually top of the pecking order (everyone stays out their way!). They seem to be able to look after themselves well but they are quite stupid and can't see very well cus of their afros (particularly the girls!). I am going to trim feathers around their eyes this weekend after watching one trying to work out how to get around a one metre run for about half an hour! I would wait to introduce them til they are big enough to defend themselves. You don't say if they are bantam or LF but I don't introduce bantams til about 12 - 14 weeks when they are a bit bigger. Maybe introduce them when they are free ranging so the little ones can get away if they want. Also with the Silky are you going to give the chicks to her straight away? If not be prepared that she might attack them if she doesn't see them as her own, she may think they are a threat to her chicks.Have a quick question for everyone. I have a mixed laying flock (well, they are not laying YET, but should be by fall) of different breeds. I have 9 girls and 1 boy, I am planning on adding the pullets of my hatch to this group once they grow out more. My silkie hen will be with them in the grow out pen as she is a good adoptive mommy and is sitting on a few eggs with the same hatch date. Have you had problems integrating polish chickens in to a mixed flock due to the "poof" and that they look different? I have a nice size coop and large run and they free range when the weather is nice and I am home (usually a few days a week and after i get home frome work) would i be better off putting them together with the silkie there to help protect them so they can all get used to each other before the poofs really grow in, or just do the introductions like I did with others using the dog crate in the coop? All of my hens are pretty laid back. My main roo is a Speckled sussex and he can be a bit aggressive with new chickens. he likes to show his authority and keep them all in line.... Just trying to prepare for any possible problems. Any tips or info would be much appreciated.![]()
If you are thinking of the pinless peepers, I have used them with success. But I did have a GL rooster once who was so stupid that he tolerated being abused all of the time no matter what. I put him down because he was just too docile and frightened of everyone.Any success with anyone using the chicken "glasses" to stop pecking? I have one hen that just pecks the Crap out of her rooster, and he just sits there as if it feels good (nuts!). She keeps him red and bloody all the time. He would be a great show bird If not for the huge bald spot in the middle of his ridiculously long craft feathers. Wondering if anyone had used the glasses as a last resort, and if it would be worth investing the time to try and find some.
I have some bearded polish bantam that are 7-8 weeks and you can see the tiniest little bit of red wattle if you part the beard on the cockerals. Hope this helpsdepends on wether or not they have a beard if they are bearded they don't have very big wattles if any.
