I have to talk POLISH!

The CSU (Chicken State University) thread is focusing on Polish. Please come join us with pictures of your birds and comments on how they meet the Standard. While I have had Polish in the past, I do not have any now, but would still like to learn more about the breed.

Thank you for sharing this. I went right over there. I'm not sure exactly how it works but introduced myself and asked what to do next.

I hope everyone here joins the class!

Good morning Polish lovers...

Don't have any...yet but want some vadly. But I have a concern. I met a breeder last week end in a pouktry show. I asked jim why there was no Polish. He told me tgat nobody wants to keep them since they are really "fragile" (sorry I'm french not sure if it is the right word)...and more supbseptible to catch desease and illness and parasites...is this true? I looked for Polish breeders here in Quebec and found none or like always don't advertize themselves...

I've had Polish for about 3 years and I find them to be very healthy, heat and cold hearty and friendliest and ooze personality. Mine love water and will stand under the hose or musters to get wet!

I have had a hen go broody. She hatched 18 chicks, was a great mom and she did it right in the hen house with about 10 other Polish.

I have raised them with my main, free ranging flock w/o any issues. But when they are penned together (I agree they do better in a large pen) I have had some issues of head pecking. I was diligent with keeping the gooey deterrent on and have always been able to stop it.

Does anyone know of someone who has quality Large Fowl Black Crested White chicks, eggs or adults for sale? I'm also looking for some LF Buff laced.

Thanks,
Pam

Ok I need some advice please, I have a lemon pekin bantam rooster, a lavender pekin pullet, 2 cream legbars, 3 ex batts and 1 wc black polish, all chickens have lived in the chicken palace for about 4 months, I have never had to put any of them to bed, but the last 2 nights my polish has gone to bed on the chicken palace roof, I have had to climb up get her and put her to bed, I'm in the uk and we are into cold wet weather, anyone know why she has decided to sleep outside???????

Mine started doing this when some of the other chickens were picking on him when he tried to roost with the others.
She isn't being picked on she is top of the pecking order under my roo, her and my roo are best friends always together, I haven't any mites or anything, I put her on the roost at night and when I go to let them out my 5 youngsters are still all on the same roost, no pecking or fighting, she had just suddenly decided to sleep outside lol

When opened the barn to let the animals out my dog alerted. She found one of my Polish roos Liberace on the ground up against the wall. He was sitting with his head low not laying flat out. It couldn't be heat because its cool and rainy. I got him up and he can stand, but has his wings hanging low and wont eat or drink. I cant find anything physically wrong with him. Is there anything else I should be looking for? What am I missing. He is in a box in the house now he is just laying there. His normal behavior would have him flying all over the place. Last night is the first I did not go in and do a head count. (Yes I feel like crap...) I know he was out running around yesterday though. he does feel kinda cool should I give him a heating pad?

My limited experience advice is to keep him warm but not hot, and pump him full of vitamins and electrolytes. Some scrambled egg and yogurt would be good. Watch for odd poops, sneezing, junk coming out his nose, etc.
Does he have an interested in food and water? You may have to encourage eating/drinking if he doesn't have interest himself. I find if you put the food on the side of the beak they will usually eat it. If he still doesn't show interest you might have to open his beak and put it inside.
