I have to talk POLISH!

Are polish healthy birds if kept in a good environment? I know some breeds are weaker than others. It doesn't get too cold where we live, so that's not a problem. So I need to know if they are pretty resistant to stuff, and if they get along with friendly breeds? Thanks!
I have found Polish to be very healthy. I usually have 40+ polish in my flock at any given time and have not had any health issues with any of them. I have read people have had problems getting chicks to survive but that has not been my experience. I could see how shipped Polish chicks could be stressed on arrival since they are typically smaller than other large fowl, and if you are getting bantams shipped with large fowl that could be a problem.

The problem I see most common with polish is that their head dresses and tail feathers get plucked. If you are going to raise polish chicks it is a good idea to keep No-Pick on hand and use it at the first sign of balding. Once the chick starts getting bald, their head becomes an attractive nuisensce and you will need to keep applying no pick til the feathers grow back. A fully feathered adult head dress rarely gets plucked... it the pin feathers that seem to attract pluckers.

I found one of my polish chicks picked so bad i thought he would die. I bought the Wound Kote and applied that. Do I need to put the no pick on him?

He is scratching around and acting like a chicken today. Showing no signs of being cold. I got the wound kote which is actually purple...  So is my hand now. lol   If it turns out to be a roo I think its name will be Friar Tuck since that's who it looks like now.

One of ours is named Baldie because he shaved his head by standing in the incubator fan and almost decapitated himself, then his brothers kept him bald for another 3 months. Hes ok now but a bit more neurotic than the others. I think his brain was damaged....lol

I saw 2 little Polish Peepers under my Silkie! She's early. They are so cute. I got chick feed just in time.

I paid $23 for a bag of chick starter today. Is that the going price?

Yes, I would. Once the pin feathers start growing in the chicks pluck em right back out. Unfortunately, you will need to apply it every other days as it does not last long. There is something call pine tar that is supposed to last longer but I have never found it or used it.

Also, blue cot will stain the feathers for months. No pick stains too but eventually wears off.

To any one experianced= is there any chance of getting good quality chicks from a feed store? Also, would one polish be ok by herself, or do I need to get two? (if i got another breed it would either be a cochin, or crested) Thank you!
