Well after waiting for 11 weeks, I am completely convinced that I have 2 roosters, 6 hens and two undecided silkies (those are on another thread)

My Buff Orpington, Irene became Ivan quite early on as her comb and wattles grew HUGE! He is a very sweet affectionate rooster and pampers his girls and rounds them all up at night.

I am in the process of deciding to start calling Virginia Virgil. Virgil is not mean but he is completely unfriendly and nearly impossible to catch. He hates to be held, and I dont see him doting on the other chickens so much. I'm sad because he is the one chicken I was looking forward to the most since he is a silver laced wyandotte. He is going to be beautiful!

My question is, can I have both Roosters or should I rehome one? So far there is no competition or fighting. Neither is crowing. If I have to pick, I will pick Ivan.

(yes, I see the problem with my dog. Working on that! )

You can have both, with little problem. I don't know if you have a problem with crowing, but if so, dont have a rooster in the first place. If you raise the roos together, they should be fine together. I have 3-6 at any given time, and if they get to know each other, there is little problem.

Well that is good to know! I don't have a problem with crowing, but I thought that whoever crows first is establishing their dominance. I just don't want fighting. This is my first experience with chickens so I'm learning as I go. I will be thrilled to be able to keep Virgil. He is going to be gorgeous. And from what I have read, his personality could change as he gets older.

also, I like the idea of having at least one rooster as I live near the woods and like a protective bird around with them. (my dog could use a good pecking too!)

I have four, believe it or not, and they only got unfriendly to each other when we had to keep them in a smaller pen then their used to, And one was brooded by one of my hens, with his sister, and she wouldn't let us touch them, and he's fine.

Oh, and since their aggressive with each other, they fight a lot, unfortunately. The other day one was bleeding a lot, but now he's ok!

They may be OK, they may not. I had a wyndotte rooster slaughter his 2 brothers before I knew anything had changed. I would just keep an eye out for any shifts in the wind.

There is every chance those two will be grumpy old coots grumbling about how hens layer eggs in THEIR day. ;)

It's different from roo to roo.

Thanks all! I'm really happy right now to know that I might be able to keep them both! I will keep a close eye on her. I will also work hard on socializing Virgil.
