The egg next to it has pipped as well. Only it pipped on the bottom.
They are both in the open lockdown area now. (Yes, I broke the rules and reached in while they were hatching). I was worried about the upside egg, but it turns out the check is moving and peeping every once in a while. Neither egg is shown signs of shrink wrapping, however I get no movement out of the americauna egg.
Do they take breaks while hatching?
Also, if I see signs if shrink wrapping, can I go in and help? What do I do to help?
Just an update.....Not a good one, but good outcome....
I keep checking on the chicks and discovered that they were shrink wrapping!
Most of the shell has fallen away from the shrink wrap area, which helped me out a bit....
I haven't touched the 'Bator during these checks, just looking thru the window. A quickie search of the forums lead me to the answers I was looking for. I have gotten the RH up in the 'Bator (Warm water soaked rag placed inside), the membranes have been rehydrated (Very careful application of wet rag and a baby medicine dropper of warm water on the membranes) and the chicks are peeping!!
Now, I will be leaving them alone and letting them finish on their own....
Yes a sponge or rag does wonders if you see shrink wrapping happening.
Sometimes (not very often) if I find a chick that has zipped the shell but the membrane is not breaking I might go in and help just like you did.. I place the egg on a warm damp rag directly so that it absorbs the water to stop shrink wrapping.
Give the guys time.. its a lot of work getting out! after pip I give 24 hrs no help at all unless shrink wrapping then I just add the rag.
after 24 hrs I "might" and its a big might.. help if can..
Mostly i just flake off the zip line if needed to pop the cap on a tired chick but I try very hard not to interfere as it normally causes more problems then it solves.
(mostly its the last chick to hatch and has issues with running out of energy)
It's got a little bleeding (dunno why), but I think it will be fine (it's minimal). This is right on time according to my calender. Hooray for successful hatches!!
The other is still working on hatching. I see (minimal amount of) blood inside the membrane, so I don't know what that's about..... Pipped a vein maybe? Early hatcher? Normal?
OK, first an apology to the mods of the board. Sorry for so many posts Roos and Hens!
I got a couple pictures of the bird and it's yet to be hatched 'bator mate...
I happened to check on them again and this one was mostly out, by the time I found my phone, he was out completely and moving around.
I pealed the shell back so I could begin the process of hydrating the membrane. It's now uniformly clear and the chick is moving easily. This one wasn't as bad as the other.....
