Well today is day 21 and when i went out to the coop this morning at 8:00 one chick had began pipping. And at 12:00 the chick has evidently pecked more at the opening and I actually heard a peep come from under the hen!!! I looked under her and the egg had not been hatched yet. So what I need to know is if I should seclude her from the hens and my rooster? She is in a room that is connected to the main coop but i can shut the door between them so she is alone. The hens are all free ranging anyways and arent giving her too much trouble. Also when should i interveen and help because im not sure it takes a chick 6 hours to hatch out and im beggining to get worried that it wont hatch. please help and respond!! thanks

Same here!!!!!! 3 more to go!

I am not sure how long these were sat on as the eggs came from a farmer friend, so we will just have to see over the next few days.

It can take a chick 24 hours to hatch out so don't worry and sit tight I'm sure they'll be out tomorrow! I have some pipping now too at day 21 and I expect them to be out tomorrow at the latest, they rest alot and absorb the rest of the yolk whilst hatching.

Yes, the wait is sooo terrible though!!! I need at least one more to hatch of the 4. I have two broodies and I dont want the other one to be sad that her egg didnt hatch.

ONE JUST HATCHED!!!!!!!!!! IT LOOKS LIKE A LITTLE BLACK ONE!!!!!!!!!! i shut the door because all the hens grew intrest when the peeping began and i have read about chicks being speared by other hens feet. I AM SOOOOOOO EXCITED!!!!! THIS IS MY FIRST CHICK OUT OF 3 BATCHES OF FAILED ATTEMPTS!!!!!!!!!!!! now for the other 4 babies............

ok so if the other chicks dont hatch within 24 hours then they wont hatch at all?? I thought I read that somewhere. There are defenitly some rotten eggs in there because I can smell it. I have experience with rotten eggs under broodies and I recognize the smell. im afraid to take the ones i think are rotten out because they could be fertile. Also should I take the chick out or leave her under mama. You know with all the rotten smell under her is it safe for the chick??

i looked and i think it is a barred rock. it makes sense because three of my roosters favorite hens are barred rocks. so does anyone have an answer for my questions above????
