I just bought those suet bird treat things...

I got a big bag of beef scrap fat from the butcher for free. I tossed it into the crock pot and cooked it a long long time. The fat melted and the moisture evaporated, leaving liquid and big chunks of what looked like pork rinds. So I used a slotted spoon to pull out the crispy protein bits, crunched them up and put some extra chick food into it to soak up the grease, stirred it all together, and tossed it to some very happy chickens. Then I mixed a ton of scratch with the liquid fat and poured into a mold to make homemade suet cakes.

i had said on another thread after we were talking here that i mixed up a big batch of suet and spooned it into an 18 pack egg carton (hoping it wouldnt stick) and froze it and now i pop out the little round suet balls and throw them to the chickens. they love it. it works pretty well, i have two 18 packs in the freezer full of suet treats.

LOL yes, I replied there first, then realized that this was the wrong thread and came here and tried again.

OH, and my block of suet and scratch is probably a gallon or so, it's pretty big. I figure I'll put it out on cold eveningss to fill up their crops before bed. Upstate NY gets Cooold!!!

I have a recipe for suet that uses lard, peanut butter, cornmeal, wheat flour and then I usually just add extras to it.

It's a no melt type, I'll have to try and give some to the chickens too this winter.

Thanks!

I'm too cheap to buy ingredients for them.

I've already got scratch and the fat was free. If I end up with appropriate waste food or freebies, though, I'd make other flavors... why not?
