I just cut my satellite TV cord!!

Several years ago I somehow signed a 2-year contract with Dish Network without fully realizing what I was doing.

I resented that service for the whole two years and couldn't wait until the time I could cut it off. The day before the 2-year contract was up I called them and told them to come and pick up their equipment. That was 17 months ago and since then all we've had is Netflix and Hulu. We were paying $75/mo for the Dish, and dropped to $15/mo for Netflix, with free Hulu, and every member of the family at one time or another commented "I LOVE this". Its not often you can cut services and costs and make everyone happier than they were before! Now we can watch our favorite TV shows and movies without having to fast forward through the commercials, and our recordings aren't interrupted by thunderstorms. The once concession we made to being able to watch real TV was to get a Roku box (one time purchase). So now we can watch Netflix on the TV, except without the commercials. My kids sit there watching sitcoms and dramedys and all the rest, just like we have TV - except we don't.

I am not familiar with ROKU. What is it and how does it work?

Its a little box similar to a cable box. You hook it up to your TV and it connects to your Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime etc account(s). So you can watch the streaming movies or TV shows directly on your TV. In order to use it, you need to have an account that includes streaming (for example, on Netflix you can choose a DVD service where you only get DVD's in the mail, or you can choose to have streaming, that would allow you to watch things instantly via your computer. If you have the latter, you can also watch them on TV via your Roku box).

I like my roku. It locks up a lot on hulu an hulu is not free on there but its still good. That an netflix an Revision3 and and and...

With cheep equipment I get 7 channels all with sub channels. Thats most known networks from a old outside antenna, a walmart receiver an a old TV. The antenna is aimed at Chattanooga 30 miles in the Mtns away.

Welcome to the club! We live out in the middle of nowhere, and satellite tv was about our only option. It was horribly overpriced for what it offers. My husband is very computer wise, so he put a big antenna on the house and angled it to pick up all the main channels, hooked up a computer to our tv and downloaded a tv guide to it and scheduled it to record all of our favorite shows. We can fast foward through commercials. Myth TV is the software he uses. It's been great! We don't watch a terrible amount of tv anyway, but we get our Office, Modern Family, Big Bang Theory, King of Queens, and New Adventures of Old Christine. I'm a happy camper. Can't beat free! We use netflix too.

We haven't had cable at our house for five years. It's rare if we even watch local channels. All my news and video entertainment comes from the Internet. We have Netflix streaming and I love it. :) If the TV is on, it's probably due to video games. :)
