I just got a letter from the zoning board :*(

There is such a thing as a grandfather rule. This means you don't have to do a thing, if they change the zoning, because you were agricultural. New buyers have to follow the new rules. So don't worry about it.

This is an issue, and the neighbors have the right to complain. At least you restrict when they can be loud, so you are doing the right thing. It's not that they are getting woken up at night, like a barking dog can do. I have Saxonies and they are very quiet. I very seldom get a loud quack out of any of them. They usually do the gag gag thing, which is less in volume then my normal speaking voice. The boy seem to out perform the girls when it comes to noise. I can show them their favorite teats and they wont quack either. They do get excited and run with their gag gag sounds, but that is it. They used to quack when they were young. I guess it is because there are predators around and they figured less noise, less attention. You wont even know they are around unless you look. In a way it is very nice that way.

I wish you the best of luck with the effort to keep the ducks. I live in a neighborhood that has covenants against anything other than a dog or cat. Knowing this, I chose to get ducks anyway. I only have 2, and consulted my immediate neighbors about it, asking if they were opposed to it, and if they are ever a bother, let me know. I lucked out with 2 very nice neighbors that have partially adopted my 2. I know, though, that if there is a serious complaint, I will have to change things.

Does your daughter have a few favorites? Maybe thin the flock down to those. This would keep the noise and smell down. It would show that you respect the neighbors feelings. Then go visit. Do you have a relationship with your neighbors? They do have a right to complain, but so many things get settled when people can sit down with one another and talk it out. If I were you, I'd bring freshly baked cookies and good quality whiskey. Nothing says peace offering like cookies and booze! Good Luck!

this is so sad and a nightmare... i'm happy my neighbors are so awesome, i dunno what i'd do if i they reported me for my animal hoarding...

maybe you could replace them with muscovy ducks... they are super quiet... keep the one she's attached to the most and get muscovy hatching eggs...??¿¿¿¿

Question: Are your neighbors aware of your DD's condition and how the ducks have effected her so positively?

If not, try educating them. It may just be ONE that's a problem, and if so then maybe you can get them to realize that a little racket is worth a young girl's life. Amazing what open communication can do. If you're willing to tell strangers, mayor/etc, about her condition you should be comfy with talking to them. Because, should you get to keep them it's likely the whiner will call in and demand to know why... and then word will get out anyways. Better to be upfront now, and in doing so you may be able to get letters of support from them to send along with your letter to the mayor. Maybe even get the one who complained to retract it and nip the whole thing.

It's a thought anyways.

and here's hoping.

If you're comfortable revealing the city you're in there might be even more help for you. People in your area will be familiar with all the authorities you need to talk to, and your rights, etc.

I'm so happy you're doing what you can to help your daughter keep her ducks. Animals are amazing therapy.

You may be right with this, but there have been cases where people won on this small little technicality. So I would not rule this out and argue about it. Some cities rather pull back and don't even want to fight this issue, since it cost them more then they gain.
