Although it is illegal to kill a protected species, I think I have read that protecting livestock in imminent danger is allowed within reason. Of course you can't put out kill traps for raptors to prevent livestock loss, but I don't think they will cart you away for punching an owl in the coop, especially since it was still able to fly away.

It is illegal to harrass or harm all birds protected by the migratory species treaty act. There are no provisions for protecting livestock. They expect you to provide them with safe shelter or take your losses. If you want a huge pile of red tape, you MIGHT eventually get a permit to remove a specific bird threatening your flock.

Actually she said "reaching down in a rage" or something to that effect. It makes no sense to me when folks get angry at animals for doing what animals do. It only got in because the OP didn't shut her pen early enough. I would be mad at myself, not the owl. And as for defending your flock against a protected bird, you should do the minimum required to eliminate the threat. Owls are very easy to startle/frighten away. Next time just scare it without striking it, it will move on.
