I just punched an owl!!!

Wow!! I had no idea that an owl would actually go in a coop after chickens! We have a Great Horned owl in our neighborhood, but I figured that my girls were pretty safe except in the mornings when they are out before it is really light. Guess I had better rethink that one!

It is the bragging about it that I was referring to, not the gut reaction. Yes, the gut reaction was illegal, but probably not intended to be; certainly not a thought out plan of "gee, I'll leave the coop door open for the owls to enter, then I'll knock 'em down with a left hook to the beak." Nevertheless, bragging about it on a public forum is probably as poor a choice as my stated example.

Although I did not necessarily take the original post to be bragging, your point is well taken. We should not do anything to harm a protected species. I have read of someone being prosecuted for using an unapproved poison on rodents I believe that was found to be the cause of a raptor's death.

I'm glad the owl flew away.

Holy crud.

Locked coops and covered runs provide the best security. Some people swear by the Nite Guard flashing red lights - I have no experience with their use.

Sorry for your startled feff, but this still cracks me up a day later. If I had of gone in my coop in the dimly lit dawn of the day and found I was next to an owl instead of a chicken... I would have screamed like a little girl, and probaly wacked the thing as well.... You just never think of the what if for situations like that!!!!!

I thought it was funny too.Not like you knew it was an owl and went to town on it.I have read of people thinking a coon or possum was a wee little kitty or something(in the dark) before finding out the shocking truth as they reached for it.

Sonoran, I took it as...omg, I can't believe it. I have to tell someone what happened.
Not...I am so cool, I kicked owl butt.
But, yes, saying you did something against the law openly is not too bright. What are the flashing Night Guard lights? I've noticed a few hawks trying to scope out the coop even though it is secure and I know there are owls.
