Just got home from picking up Jessica and Austin and she had finished her egg yolk and ate some of the white. AND SHE WALKED OUT OF THE CAGE BY HERSELF AND FLEW UP ON TOP OF IT!!! She is out walking on her own. She walks very slow and tentatively. Like a very old lady. I really think she has been caged her whole life. Her toes are curled and gnarled from her super long nails and her feathers are so gnarly. And she never holds her tail up. Well, that is all going to change!! Can't wait for her to be well enought to be out on the grass and outside in the sun. I know we aren't out of the woods yet. But the change is just not believable!
Oh, and where do I find liquid probiotics? If they are for humans, how much would I give her? She really does not like the yogurt. I have managed to get just a very little down her by dipping her beak, but she is like "NO WAY".
Health food store. I also use probiotic capsules (refrigerate them), open them, and sprinkle some of the contents in anything I can get them to eat (oatmeal, fruit, anything).
Just remember,
it took quite some time for her to get in the shape she's in,
and it's going to to take even longer to get her back healthy.
Keep a close watch because as long as her immune system is low, she will be susceptible to just about anything.
She may seem to improve one day and the next may seem like a setback, and this can come from her simply over doing it from one day to the next, at least until she regains some strength.
We're pulling for you Tira!!
And what about the sex link girl?
How's she doing?
Looking good! I'm happy she is turning around! Keep up the good work!
At our local farm supply store I get Probisis (sp?) that I use for the calves and cows. It is also labeled for chickens and many other animals. It is a probiotic. It comes in many forms so you can find one that will work for your situation. I would make sure that B also has some form of a probiotic.
B is doing great. She doesn't act ill at all. And she ATTACKS the spoon with the yogurt on it. It's like, just make sure your fingers aren't near the yogurt and you will get to keep them. If she had a longer tongue, she would lick the spoon clean. I have her on the medicated chick feed and sulmet and her poop is still blood tinged, but not runny at all. She is really perky and doing great otherwise.
Tira is on top of the kennel with water in front of her and a plate of egg, oatmeal and wetted layer crumbles. I am finding that she dives for the yellow of the yolk and will eat whatever is under it. But as soon as the yolk is gone, she quits. And she only eats maybe a teaspoon at most at a time. It is way too little for her. Will her love of egg yolk, encourage her to eat eggs if she is ever around any? And any other suggestions to tempt her? I tried some yams left over from Thanksgiving (we had ours Sat.) but that was a no go. I am really please with how much she is drinking though.

Not unless you've given her a whole egg-(shell and all intact) - so that it is immediately recognizeable as an egg.... she shouldn't bother eggs in the nest box unless of course she had the habit of egg-eating before you got her.
