This is Grey, and I got him (and the rest of his first flock) in spring of 2018. He’s the only one of my original turkey flock that I still have after a devastating coyote attack. He (and now that he has a new flock, all of the rest of the turkeys do this as well) follows me around the yard like a puppy. He’s so protective of me that he was willing to jump between the rooster that he’s terrified of and myself (even though I did not need his help, thank you very much).

Because of his overprotectiveness and his past reaction to me showing affection to other flock members, I was worried about introducing him to the new, younger turkeys, but he took it in stride and adopted them easily.

I may be slightly partial to bourbon reds, but he’s certainly a special bird in my eyes. In spring and summer, I’ll take out a towel and sit in the grass, and he always stands nearby, either grazing, keeping an eye on me, or laying down to rest for awhile himself.

Decided to include some pictures of him with his “kids” (as we refer to them). Until I knew the young ones could take care of themselves, they lived separately, but now, they’re almost as big as him so they all live happily together. When they were small, he was allowed to see them with extreme supervision. They would pull on his feathers and his beard and he never batted an eye. He stood protectively over their every move.

Grey always becomes broody after mating season and nests down on stolen eggs so I can’t really say that I’m surprised with how well he took to them. He just came out of at least a month long brood a few days ago.
