I killed my first predators last night

This thread was started by the OP regarding the elimination of two "pest species", raccoons and oppossums that no one nor their future generations will ever have to worry about disappearing off the face of the planet.

Please refer to the BYC rules regarding the "Pest and Predators" section.

If you are against killing predators, that is fine. This section covers dispatching predators. Please withhold your underhanded judgements ("our heavy burden") of the OP or the rest of us that support pest removal. They are counterproductive in this section.

Listen up, folks! Enough judgements, already. Refresh your memory of this Predators section and refrain from criticizing the methods of those protecting their flocks.

*Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means.

*Compassion will go a long way toward helping to educate and help solve someone's predator problem. No matter the reason, most members' birds are their pets and being a chicken doesn't make it less of a pet than a house cat or companion dog. Please don't lecture or hassle anyone about their losses. >>Any coon, fox, coyote, stray dog, or possum that comes into my yard WILL be shot and I don't care if they are just coming to eat my cat's catfood. They'll keep coming back and as soon as the cat food is all gone... they'll find the chickens.<<

YUP!!

In my case the racoon found my old pet cat asleep in his house by the front door and disemboweled him! Chickens were locked up, no cat food out because it was raining...So MY CAT GOT RIPPED.

Next night the racoon was "humanely?" dispatched with a 22 to the head.

I just want to end with this.. I don't like loosing my birds. All my layers have names, and their own personalities. I don't keep so many that loosing one or two won't hurt.... It does. Not to mention all my birds have been hand raised, and are counting on us for protection.

I realize that humans are encroaching on the wildlife habitat, but me as a human being feel I have the right to protect me and mine from anything else that walks, creeps or slithers, be it 2 legs or 4.

A Predator proof coop is ideal to prevent this, but a determined raccoon will figure out your weakness in a heartbeat and exploit it. Of course there are animals that are large enough to just force their way through. Like I said, my pets, my food, my rules. Play with fire.......................

I could pull out some old recipes so it doesn't go to waste? PM me if interested
