I knew this cat was no good.... UPDATE Men + Bud + Cat=LOL

I never took care of problem animals in front of my kids, but they know that no neighbor pets or strays are welcome.I don't think there is trauma in telling the kids we have limits and rules. It is not as if I would blow apart a cat with a shotgun and laugh about it.Even pest pets deserve a quick death or trip to the pound.

The child of the missing pet will realise free roam is not the way to go ,and will keep their next pet indoors or better yet build an enclosure.

so sorry for your loss I hope you catch the cat quickly and your son and grand daughter and you find some peace.

My son had rabbits when he was a kid about 10 years old or so. We were constantly telling him to feed and water them. I finally got rid of them and he didn't notice it for 2 weeks. I really doubt any kid would retaliate over losing a pet that is something adults usually do. Kids deal and get over stuff much more easily and quicker than most parents give them credit for it is the parents that teach them to fuss and get all upset over a dead kitty and drag on about it.

Because children find great comfort in their pets and to hurt that animal especially if the child is aware or see that it has happened could emotionally damage and traumatise that child. Also from what you are suggesting - you would teach a child who has lost its chicks to go hunt and kill another childs pet in retaliation or retribution? Really that is not a healthy concept. As then you get two unhappy kids that hate eachother!!!!!!! Both of which are losers!!!! As a parent, grandparent, chicken and cat owner I think the feelings and wellbeing of a child come way up the list of priority here!!!!!

Anyhow it is probably the case that this particular cat is abandoned by the previouse owners of the house and is not a pet of a neighbors child.

Really?? You act like I said go out there and kill the cat in front of a kid!! I don't believe I ever said that! And if you read the OP's post she has already stated that this cat has been coming around her house for a year!! What I suggested is for people to think about what they say to someone that has lost their birds, and to quit automatically worrying about a pet owner that just might not exist!!

OK FIRST!

I was really upset when I came in here yesterday after walking in on the killing. I lost some very expensive and some rare breeds. That cat does nothing but stink up my yard and get into trouble. After a little while I did calm down. I didn't want to kill anything except right after looking at those babies. I've been losing birds to thieft and trying to rebuild my flock with the breeds I need to replace and I've spent more money the last 10 months than I bet most of you have. Trust me. I Have spent way more that I should have and now I can't afford to do it again, so spend they money I did and then defend that cat.

For anyone who would think I would let these kids know what I had been talking about. SHAME ON YOU! To many judgemental people in here and yes, some of us are in this for more than an couple of eggs a day and a cool pet, although we are very attached to our animals. These birds were for my breeding program and for the kids to show so they had something constructive to do and to learn to care for some living creatures. I've owned cats. Not for years, because they were house cats and did go out with me in the yards, but I can't deal with the smell. I've smelled cat poop in yards that smelled worse than the dairy and livestock auctions near me. I don't hate them, just don't care for them much unless I know them. I have some favorite cats!

ANYWAY.......the main reason I came onto the thread is to announce the cat problem is gone. At least with this one. And I didn't have to do a thing.

I was pming someone who was helping me by loaning me a live trap that I was going to put out at night until I caught it. While I was in the middle of a pm I got a knock on the door from the guy down the street. I hope he came in here and reads this, since I told him about it and I'm also trying to get more members. LOL

I hope you're here!

The cat got into another brooder this morning. NOT MINE! The neighbor showed up with the cat in a transport box and mad at me and MY cat. LOL He caught it killing his Game chicks. Don't know if he's back, but the cat is on it's way to the shelter not far from here. I made sure he had the information about the site, because I don't think he believed me when I said it wasn't mine. He sees the cat here all the time. I told him to make sure they knew what it did so they wouldn't place it anywhere that someone has chickens. His whole brooder was hit. He lost over 30 chicks and shows his Games. I saw him at the Stockton show resently.

If it hadn't gotten passed me yesterday, I don't know if I would have killed it, but I think if I had been ready for that, yeah I think I would have. Twenty minutes later I was all for catching it and taking it in. Best part of the whole thing is the cat is gone and I didn't have to lift a finger. I have to admit the fat thing is a beautiful cat, but I'm so glad it's on it's way to maybe finding a home that cares enough to keep it under control.

BTW............My neighbors hands and arms have tooth marks and scratches and he's still just taking it in. Needs to be tested now anyway.

So glad that it worked out for you I am sorry about the you lost your birds If I had any of the breeds you needed I would send you some but I don't I hope some how you can find some birds to replace what you lost. Praying for things to get better for you and the kids.

What kills me is I lost every chick I hatched from your eggs. They were just beautiful and I've always gotten nice birds from you. I cried my eyes out trying to get them all out of the brooder. The splash was they only one I couldn't find, but my others were in there just crushed. Had to keep wiping my eyes on my sleeve so I could see what I was doing.

Also I was right yesterday. Finally count of the ones it didn't get was 11, so I lost 25 chicks. I do still have a couple of the FBCMs from the eggs I won at the show, but all the others are Cuckoos. Weird thing is I had a hard time getting the lid off again today when I went out to feed the survivors. Then again the neighbor had a friend with him carrying that case and he was a big guy and held it in two arms. That cat is bigger close up than I even thought it was. It's huge and it bounced in the crate twice and the guy almost dropped it. I just hope they come in here and read the thread.
