All I know is that all Ratites (ostrich, emu, rheas) are off limits to us up here. There's a market for them, too... drat it.

The color of those eggs is gorgeous. If only chickens could lay eggs that color... I bet you could charge a pretty penny for evergreen-colored chicken eggs

At the last swap meet I went to in September or October they had young Emu's hatched this spring for $40 each. I have also seen the eggs at swaps both fertile and blown out for crafts. I think they were about $10 each.

That's good to know, Mrs ABB. I hadn't looked into it yet, but the thought had crossed my mind (DH would seriously consider divorce if I did!).

Alaska Fish and Game is very, very strict about introduced species in Alaska, as well as any species that could potentially carry disease to our existing wildlife. I'm sure the justification is in there somewhere. I just can't see Emus or Ostrich getting loose and starting rampant populations though. Talk about bear bait! All the big brownies would be thinking "forget salmon, I'm having giant chicken tonight!"
