Alright, I'm about to bite the dust and buy an incubator-rather DH is for Valentine's Day!! We don't have the money for the Brinsea I want, but TSC has still air LG's for 41.99 and I thought what the heck-instead of flowers that die...... Anyways, I've been researching till my eyes are bloody and I will eventually buy a turner for the still air but right now I've read how some of you start the eggs in cartons and then finish them on the screen covered with rubberized shelf liner. Sounds good to me, but how do you raise the carton and how high? Please be as descriptive as possible, complete and total newbie here! I still can't believe I'm asking these questions and about to finally get an incubator!! Woohooo!!!

If you have them in a carton, don't tip the carton, tip the whole incubator. Put a big book or something under one edge, and then move it to the other side.

If you lift the carton inside the incubator, you will put the eggs too close to the heating element, and will "cook" them.

Okay, that was a concern of mine, but if I tip the whole incubator-how would I keep the water from spilling out? Thanks!

Or....can I just go ahead and put the rubberized shelf liner down and just use that to roll them easier. I imagine it would be hard to roll them on the wire, wouldn't they just roll into each other and not stay where I want them?

I have a baby bowl in there, with a new sponge in it. The sponge wicks up the water, increasing surface area & humidity. It is DRY here, so even with 5 sponges, I am lucky to get 50%. So, most of the time I dry hatch up until lockdown. Then I do the wet wash cloth/sponge thingy.

I have always just done the rolling by hand, without issues. But I set 55 eggs last week, and hand turning stank. So I bought an egg turner. The rubberized stuff holds water TOO well, and I would worry about bacterial growth over 21 days. I tried it once and it discolored the eggs within 1 day. Left a little pattern on them.
