I compared them to dogs... in that you have to establish dominance and expect obedience, and Hubby thought I was crazy at first until I pointed out both animals are pack/flock animals where males tend to be dominant.
Ya a lot of drunken rednecks around here have the same ideas and simular methods for keeping their wives and children in line too.

I don't really get the being dominant chicken thing. In my mind that means they would be waiting for an opportunity to challenge me? I don't display challenging or dominating behaviour to my roos or submissive either. I just stick to a routine and interact when necessary. If mine ever show aggression to me i will chop them. Time will tell if i'm on the right track :)

I think it all depends on the bird. Some won't care, others will test, some will be complete jerks. You never know.

Sunday when I was working in the yard Emmett crowed every time I came around the corner. Every time! I ignored him for a bit and went about my business, but he would NOT stop.

I chased him. All over the yard. With a stick to goose his bottom. My husband thought it was hilarious. It ended with the rooster under the car parked in the yard, sulking :lau
He crowed under there once, so funny.

Problem solved, for now.

Lol, the dominance is more about confidence. I want to emphasize that confidence. You walk into the coop and watch your rooster, but you're not cowering, you're not exhibiting threatening behavior or submissive behavior. It's a lot about acting normal and if he comes at you, you can't run away or back down because that reinforces the negative behavior. About the rednecks... karma, that's all I'll say. Hah!

I agree with this a lot more than your other one.
I just do my thing wherever whenever I want and let them do their thing as long as it isn't in my way.
They don't see me as a rooster.
I don't want to be a rooster
They don't want me to be a rooster
I don't act like a rooster
They don't treat me like a rooster
And thats all good. I don't want to spend my time playing rooster games.
The holding and carrying around, pinning down, chasing them around, stopping them from mating and crowing all that is playing rooster games. Its like stooping to their level. Trying to do things like a rooster would to dominate another rooster etc. seems like the wrong approach to me but it is fascinating to read about because its something I don't do and cool to follow and see where it goes.
I don't think I have problems with roosters because I'm not messing with their survival or mating so they have no reason to. I'm just another creature on the farm to them.

I'm in a quandary over this guy. He's 7 months old, a great guy with the girls and gorgeous. He has a pea comb and I would love it if we added some blue egg layers to the flock which I could do if I hatch fertile eggs from my EE girl.
On the flip side he's come after me because I was in a hurry and walked past too fast for his liking; I had to chase him across the yard and he was still invading my space later like he was considering another attack. He has chased the 5 year old. He crows a LOT and I'm worried the neighbors are going to complain. I've seen him sizing up the 8 year old who is darn near 5 feet tall for no reason other than he was there.
Hubs and I are discussing our options. I have a little blue Australorp roo now too and his dad seemed pretty chill and quiet
I hate this part of chicken keeping
