For about 35 years I didn't own a dryer. Hung most of the laundry indoors. No worries about rain that way. No it wasn't a large house, but I used a storage area and several lines. Then I moved a few years ago and bought the first clothes dryer I've ever owned -- after I retired.
I despise the smell of clothes dried outdoors and love finally having soft towels. Other than that there isn't much difference. I used to dry a lot of clothes on hangers; the amount of work isn't that different with a dryer.
