I had a Dom hen once that had chicks when I bought her. I swear she missed MAYBE 2 days a month laying and a few times she laid 2 in a day. Most will say impossible, but she did. I had to sell my flock and the lady that has her loves her. She says she has never missed a day and she's had her over a year now. Her eggs were larger. Maybe it's the lines, but they weren't punny eggs.

I know what you mean about just being disappointed. I got quite a few little surprises from the eggs that I've had shipped to me. Some I can't figure out. Two were Blue Marans, beautiful but not what I ordered.

Theres a two week old in the bator, just beautiful, yellow chick that is feathering out with a black or brown lace I think. God knows what she is.

Glad I had some room to do separate pens when the time comes.

Barred Rocks are gorgeous! My husband had a favorite about 3 years ago. He was a rooster. The Raccoon decided he was meatier, so he went after him instead of my leghorns. Smart Raccoon!

when you say your reputation, you are reffering to selling the eggs in the incubator right now, that you got from the same person who sold you dominique eggs instaed of rock eggs? You can tell at hatch who has a single comb, so despair no more! You can tell them apart, thus preventing further mixup

In most production type birds, yes, but in the heritage bred ones, not really.
Plymouth rocks are a dual purpose breed, so not as many eggs and more meat.
Dominiques are listed as a dual purpose bird but they are more on the egg laying side because they are smallish. They also have rose combs which make them less susceptible to frost bite.
I believe both go broody
In the production type birds they will do just that produce VERY well, but they have lost some of the size.
I don't think you can really go wrong with either.​

Dominique, but at least they are female. We often hear that the Dominique lays a smaller egg, what would be considered a medium, but for the hatchery stock, it's hard to tell the difference between Dom and BR. Like Punky said, with some of the heritage lines, they eggs may be smaller and the hens broody.

Let me tell you this - hatchery Dominiques are very friendly, IMO, you may fall in love.... .

Truly, thank you everyone! I really, really appreciate your replies, information and encouragement! I think you are right: I will definitely give these guys/girls

a chance to see what they are made of, lol. I do think the majority are female...the closeup of the bird's face in the first pic: nobody thinks it's a boy?

danielle82: thanks for that! I had never hatched dominiques before so I truly didn't realize that the difference would be easily seen at hatch...of course, to be honest, while I have had adult rose combed birds, I don't recall ever hatching one so that's why this surprised me...

Anyway, thanks again, everyone for your reassurances! And punky rooster, since you obviously know a lot about BRs and Doms, I will trust your opinion over my research.

Oh thank you Gallusfarm!! I am so excited now! What were the odds, lol. My first hatch of this breed and all survivors girls

I did have one little one I had to cull at a few days old because of splay leg that wouldn't correct, it was probably the boy...

Now I just hope I get a little man out of the eggs in the incubator...assuming they ARE doms in there, lol...that would be my luck...the ones I THOUGHT were supposed to be doms will hatch as BRs...

Thanks for your encouragment, everyone. You have to understand though: I had my heart set on BRs. Already had the roo and one hen...I am just disappointed. I had researched all aspects and was just really excited that my hopes were becoming a reality. Now it looks like I have a BR roo to either sell or eat, and who knows what those two dozen eggs in my incubator will contain...

I know the feeling, and I sympathize with you. I recently bought 18 olive egger eggs from a lady locally, and I have been trying to get olive eggers for a while now. The last one I acquired, it turned out they had cross-bred too many brown egg layers in the group because she lays a dark reddish-brown egg like the color of old brick. Anyway, I got these 18 eggs, which are blue but the hen was supposedly covered by a BCM roo so the progeny would produce olive eggs, I was told.

Found out yesterday that I was given the wrong eggs and these are their project eggs. While I am quite pleased that the babies that hatch out of here will be blue egg layers, that's not what I was after, and I'm sorely disappointed. I have been trying to 4 months to get olive eggers, only to be disappointed with a brown egglayer and now these. I think I'm just not meant to have olive eggs.​
