This is so very devastating to my daughter and I. Can anyone offer suggestions on what is wrong?

I hatched out 51 quail Friday night and Saturday morning. I have about 10 left. They all seemed fine for the first 12 hours then some would start to act a bit neurological. They would tuck their heads and loose balance finally falling over. As they become worse they lay on there side. If they get knocked over they struggle to get up but cannot regain their feet.
I took some to a vet. They are sending them off to the state lab to get tested.
I have had no problems with the chickens or with some 2 and 3 week older quail. All the quail are still in the house and I do not want to let them near the chickens at this point. All the chickens were raised in the house and I still have around 25 chickens in a separate room that are ready to go out.
Do you have any suggestions or thoughts?
I do not know how long it will take the state to get results.
These were to be my daughter's 4-H project for the next few years and our breeders and supper.

There are deffinatly some illnesses that could be causing this issue but I hope for your daughters sake and the rest of your birds sake that it's not just keep them as far away from eachother as possible... if you touch anything those quails have bene exposed to wash your hands before you go out and mess with your other birds...it's better to be safe

. I wish I could help you....but i can tlel you this... not all quail illnesses are able to be transferred to chickens and vise versa

Some are, yes,but not all so lets hope if it is an illness that it's nothing that you need to worry over your chickens for. This could have been an illness that was brought in from the eggs themselves.

I just also want to say im sorry

It sounds like they're too cold to me... quail need to be at about 100°F the first week or so.

They are not cold...

The other 2 hatches did fine in the same brooder. The heat lamp is set up lower then with the chickens and they have enough room to get away from the heat to self regulate. The few that are left are spread out more around the edge of the light rather then directly under it.

They only start chirping as they are dying and cannot get up anymore. Until then they seem fine.

I've had a couple do that on me - they chirped and chirped and seemed to be unable to get up and then eventually they died because they got trampled on. I don't know what caused it though. The others seemed to be okay. I put it down to survival of the fittest. I haven't vaccinated so it could be that they picked up something and succumbed? I thought it could be something like AE (http://www.spc.int/rahs/Manual/AVIAN/AVENCEPHALITISE.htm) - it sounds like it anyway.

I gather the test results from the lab will shed more light.
