My name is Debbie and I am a chick-a-holic......

and I don't want any help. I had raised chickens for over 25 years when my husband died in 1999. I sold the property because I couldn't afford it by myself and sold all my stock and chickens. The last 9 years have hard as i rebuilt my life. I am now in North Carolina on 8 acres, 3 of which are usable, have a great boyfriend of 5 years and have chickens again thanks to him. I had kept my old incubator and we plugged it in in January and tried to hatch out some eggs someone had given us.....they weren't any good, thought it was the old incubator but wasn''t. We got some blue eggs from a friend and put them in...12 eggs in.....10 chicks out. We were happy with them and were fixing the coop.

Little girl down the road came by wanting to know what we were doing, told her chickens and she burst into tears. Seems she is in 4-H and her group is doing chickens but she couldn't afford to buy any so wasn't able to particiapate. Ok in went 10 eggs that someone sent me when I told them about her. She came everyday and did the work, charted the temps and everything for her project. Hatching day came and went ../.. no chicks..I though we had some bad shipped eggs, but they had all but 1 candled good. Left them in the bator for a few more days....day 22 we had 2 hatch, day 23 there were 4 more and day 25 brought 2 more...the others had died in the shell. She was a very happy kid, I didn't have the heart to tell her that is looked like they were all bantams (cochin and brahma). She now had them at her house and is raising them, we are providing the feed as a sponsor of her project. She lives with an elderly grandmother and they have NO money.

It is to quiet now, so we are the hunt for more eggs, found some from the great folks on here. At first we were limiting it to only 3 breeds as we live on a fixed income, but now he has found some he is interested in so he want some of the this and some of that and "oh look" don't those look great.

My grandson is coming the end of the month and really misses his chickens since he has had to get rid of them when they moved in with his mom's new husband. We found some for him from houndit so that they will be in the incubator when he get here.

Sorry for the long read, I am a chick-a-holic for sure.....but happy to be back to it.

Love those Chickens!!!!

My name is Grampa and I have a problem.

It's been 2 days since my last hatch (This one sucked by the way) and I'm already planning the next hatch. Is this normal?

I know I could unplug the bator anytime I want. But then the power company would want to check my meter. I guess I'll just keep it running "just in case".

Grandpa you'll really have a problem when you have eggs on a shelf, waiting for this batch to finish happening.

Which ummm I suppose may be the case here. Yeah, look.... turkey AND chicken eggs, and the mention of guinea eggs from the feed store ladies...

You people with NUMBERS before breeds of chickens are still counting??? Why would I do that? That would be admitting something. A LOT of something. I don't think I should do that.

Then I guess i am in trouble day 19 of my second hatch two have already hatched and 7 more pipped I have 12 sitting in the retreat ready to go in when this one empties. Yesterday I spent the morning moving 15 4 week old chicks out of their brooder into an outside pen. Moved 14 3 week old bitties into the higher brooder left empty and moved 22 3 day olds into the big brooder. Then a neighbor came over and traded DH 9 4 week old RIR for 2 21/2 dozen eggs to hatch still have 2 7 week old in one grow out pen and 7 BO 7 weeks old in another My back is aching but I'm watching that incubator closely to see what else hatches today. After selling the extras over the weekend DH has decided we need more pens so he is moving his goat fence to make room for more chicken pens lol. He figures we need at least 6 more. Now who has the addiction?

That doesn't include all the breeding and laying flocks we already have.lol

Ah Micki, now that's a man to have

And a woman after my own heart. I'm hitting the chicken swap this weekend to let go of the ones I don't want to make room for the ones growing.

Some of the delawares can go - the males with sprigs, the one with four crooked toes (one is a maybe four is right out), the females with pale green legs, the bantam brahmas(maybe), the sizzle cockerals, the barred EE cockerals and BR/BA's except Wrongway.

The poults are keepers for now. There's only seven of them -omg I counted...

The bantam brahmas are well, sort of cute, okay adorable... hmmm
