I need a new favorite author

I second Odd Thomas. I also like the Kim Harrison series, rizzoli series by Tess gerritsen (so much better then the tv series) and the Prey series by John sandford.

Mmm hmmm. Spicy!

I was going to suggest the "In Death" series.....have them all & a few signed copies...just love 'em!!

My other favorite is James Herriot...the Yorkshire veterinarian...his writing is magical & makes me laugh out loud!!

Kim Harrison- A vampire, a witch and a pixie walk into a bar looking for a leprechaun (sp?). Sounds like the start to a really weird joke but...you got to read them
Kelly Armstrong- Love the werewolves- Women of Otherworld Series- I believe I have all of them too
Patricia Briggs- Mercy Thompson series
Charlaine Harris- Like the Sookie Stackhouse ones but the older ones are good too
George R R Martin- amazing- just found him and can't get myself out of the books. Have bought the first 5

Laurell K Hamilton but sometimes it gets to preoccupied with physical acts and the plot goes bye bye. The first ones are really good though.

Based on what you said you like:

Tanya Huff: Quarters series and Valor series. The Valor series is science fiction, with the main character a sergeant in a three species intergalactic marine corps. The quarter series is fantasy with bardic gifts that include magic in four quarters: earth, water, fire and air.

Lois Bujold (my favorite author) fantasy books of the Chalion Series and Sharing Knife series, and science fiction. Bujold is very character driven, and that is why she is my favorite. Her characters are complex, interesting and you care about them. The Chalion series involves gods, demons, curse and heroes of the unexpected kind. The Sharing Knife series is set in a pastoral world, populated by farmers and Lakewalkers, and a menace called blight bogles/malices. The two groups of people have little knowledge of each other and the books are about interactions between the two groups, forced into contact by a forbidden marriage. The consequences of the romance are world changing. For me, this series started slow, with each book getting better.

Robin Hobb's Assassin. and Live Ships series: Extremely dense fantasy, but very rewarding once you get into them. She has written several series, and these are all set in the same world. The Assassin series follows the career of a royal illegitimate child who is tapped to become the family assassin. Definitely a coming of age sort of series, with bad relatives, treason, conspiracy and magic. The Live Ship series is set in another part of the same world; where ships come to life and magic taints the people. Two other series are set in the same world. The Golden Fool series (same characters as the Assassin series) and the Rain Wild books. If you decide to read Robin Hobb, skip the Soldier Son series....just not up to her usual standard, and a main character that I found whiny and unsympathetic. This is a fairly general consensus on the Soldier Son books.

If you like Alcott, you should read Jane Austin. Mostly romances, they are set in middle class England and are about middle class character, values and life. My favorite is Sense and Sensibility.
