Steig Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo trilogy is very good. Definitely not light reading, but compelling. Don't expect any more books. The author died of a heart attack just as his books were achieving international success.

Kid's books, but very good, are the Lightning Thief series by Rich Riordan.

LOVED the Lightening Thief series. Very well written and a great way to teach kids about Greek Mythology. Now just waiting for his Egypt series to come out in paperback.

I started the Larsson books and put them back down. Just didn't do it for me.

Not sure if you'd go for Watership Down by Richard Adams, but it's my favorite book.

The Redwall series by Brian Jacques is much more childish, but if you're looking for adventure fiction, it's pretty good.

They're both animal stories. Can you tell what I like?
